ok...can everyone post a pic of their cones with eggs or without eggs on them?
then we will see later what we can do ......about all these different kinds of cones.
heres one of mine.
this is just an ordinary terra cotta pot. about 8 inch size.
ive been checking out pics of all the differnt kinds.
the asians use different than us... kinda a triangle shape shingles?
then theres the fancy cones...
or pvc pipe...etc. so lets have some pics.
or....if you can find an interesting one thats unique...and get them to lay on it. and take a pic?
make sure whatever you use is either glazed with a foodsafe glaze or terra cotta or hasnt been used where something could bother the fish. as in soaps etc.
think creative is better!! Think its time to take out that ordinary flower pot...or give it a colourful face lift.

heres one i used one day....when they started wanting to lay. a few of you have seen it.
heres what she did. she laid on the pink cheek spot. and after they hatched..she took all the wigglers and moved them to the other side and put them on the exact same cheek spot on the other side. so....your discus want splashes of colour or pattern.....i have decided!! designer cones. ::)
when they laid on the glass mine always lay behind the stick on digital thermometer. as its a black strip showing for them.

Gary's right,
The heck with the pot, where did you get that beaut from? I don't particularly care for the white fish but that's about the nicest I've ever seen.

Gary and Randal, April posted about that fish in the "white fish" post a few days ago. It was originally from Cary and April happened to acquire the pair! Ohhh, and you all know how much I want white pigeons... Guess who April's sending fry to?

*raises his hand*

Well.thanks for the nice fish comment..heres the story.
yes they were posted on teh white fish please post about 3 or 4 pages back.
But..they were my friends fish..who got them from cary when they were fry.He had two spawns off of them then gave them to my other friend. so....then he was gonna sell them. so i said i want them. lol. so.they are now in my tank..and have fry. one day free swimming. but they never went on them..enough so now my alencer has some. so we shall see.
heres a pic of the female. and this is in their "breeding colours and there is a tiny bit more pepper on her. but even when socalled dark...hardly any.

then there's this one

These are from Rosenthal too. I like the look, and thats the only reason i use them. They are much more expensive than some of the other possible cones to use, but they do look nice.
Take care, Matt

YOU guys are doing great with your homework.

Matt:
I really love your new fruity pebbles. I can't wait to see your fry and hope you will post pictures of them as they grow. I'm interested to see what color they are - when do they turn white - do some have bars - when do they get spots. Are they a snowflake x leopard snake cross? Any PB?

Here is a pic of a spawning cone we use in our hatchery. It's basically made up of 3 tiles joined to form an "A" structure.

I think April's cone picture idea was really just a clever way of sneaking a peek at everyone's pairs! Matt and Roy, those are beautiful fish. I'm curious Matt, do you think the fry will look pink like their parents? I've never seen discus that color. But I like them, and I can add that to my growing list of fish that I want. ;D

I use a few different kinds.

For big spawns I use this 3" pvc cone with lots of surface area lol

Here is my combo cone with a pot base and pvc top for the fish that cannot make up it's mind. the female has been using the pot in this case

Here is my personal favorite for the fish that is a bit uptight and reluctant to spawn. these have proven effective at encouraging many different types to exibit mating activities ;)

I am the one who use mag-float as cone....lol, or should I say, my fish decided to use the mag-float..... After I removed the mag-float, they surely missed it, and even though, I put pots in the tank... they just refused to mate again.....

Regards, Ari :)

These aren't as "CUTE" as April's & Carol's but I hate to have anything sitting on the bottom of the tank that crap can get trapped around.

april,

I had the cone replicated in plastic that looks like clay, also had it re-tooled a bit, it no longer has the thick lip and rim.

the plastic was a good idea in theory but it did'nt work too well, I'll try ceramic or clay next time

well hope they get it right.
they should get further each time. now tell them the nice fertility god is the place to lay. lol.
mine laid on the glass the first time then moved them to the cone. then the next time decided it was a great place to lay.
seems like a learning process.
