Here is my new RO membrane, shes about 36" long and about 3" in diameter and is rated at about 100gpd, im getting 300gpd over night and thats only with two storage barrels and remember that my tap water is about 570 tds and after running it throught the ro unit its at 9tds. I still need to add a couple of carbon canisters to it, becouse its running so much water so fast its still comming out with chlorine in it and thats a no no. I found out that it still had some in it when a female of mine layed on her side for a few hours, i was lucky not to lose her.

I was thinking the same thing.

Randal,

how about not upgrading to 20"ers and using the "kdf" ones instead? I'm lovin' those!

I noticed my water was a little "bleachy" smelling the other day, tested at 22ppm on a Hatch chlorometer, filled a container with water filtered with the "KDF" at 8gpm brought it down to <1ppm!

What is a KDF? Do you think that would work Randal?

its a new type of hybrid carbon block, I don't know much about them other than its 2/3rds C100E whatever that is and 1/3rd carbon.

Randal sent me one to try for some h20 problems I was having. they are a little more $ compared too the regular carbon blocks, but I think well worth it considering the good job they do on chlorine, and they are rated for 20,000gallons.

hopefully Randal can tell us more about them.

That's what I get for not paying attention to a thread.....

KDF is definately an option for RO prefiltering. I am currently working on a good supplier for different sizes. The one I sent Jason was a sample from the manufacturer. I have a line on 10" RO prefilter Cartriges. I'll see if I can get a price.

KDF is actually an alloy of Copper/zinc that operates on a Redox principle, converting free chlorine to zinc and copper chlorides which are then flushed away (Rejected) by the RO unit. It also works well on Iron and heavy metals. Additionally It kills bacteria which keeps the carbon blocks and membrane from organically fouling. You do still need a carbon block after it though (according to the manufacturer) and they don't recommend using it for mass dechlorination in non-RO systems. (Found that out today!) The tech rep told me that he knows people who do, but he can't recommend it. Jason's KDF cartridge is 2/3 KDF and 1/3 Activated carbon.

If you are not planning on using your waste water for growout, KDF is your answer. If you want to use the waste water for growouts, a set of 20" 'ers will do the job (especially in large volume systems) and are actually pretty reasonable. (from me anyway).

Randal,

I'm preping my water with the kdf then through a 10" canister with metal absorbing resin, should I have a regualar carbon block in-line too?

Jason,
The metal absorbing resin should take care of anything the KDF sends through.

I've got a new resin source, if you need any DI resin. Send me the name and specs of the one you're using and I'll get you a price if you are interested.
