i m considering to feed my discus with earthworm that i collect. but i have a fear that these worms may carry pathogens/bacteria. shall i pre-treat them with some kind of medicine and what kind is suitable? can i used AZOO 'pathogen preventer'?
i still don't feel safe to feed with live food! :bomb:

I am agree with you.feeding with bloodworms are very disastrous I prefer to use the sterilzed and vacumed pack which is availeble in the pet shops.

Earthworms are my live food of choice. They don't carry anything that will harm your discus. Just don't collect them out of a chem-treated lawn or field. I started my own culture from red worms collected in the woods, and have never had a problem. They require a little more preparation than blackworms(for young discus), but I think it's worth it.

Hi,

i posted this here so that i can get more opinions.

Al mentioned a source for live brine shrimp and i looked at their website--pretty cool.

http://www.livebrineshrimp.com/

What caught my attention was the earthworms they have.

They call them night crawlers.

Is a eartworm and night crawler synonyms?

Also how do you feed earthworms-do you chop'em?

On their website, there is a package with 1 inch worms.

Happy Easter

If these night crawlers are like the ones I use for fishing, they are quite large. Probably twice the size of regular earthworms. I would say they might not be suitable for discus simply because of their size. You'd have to chop 'em up a lot.

I use red wigglers and the adult howms are around 2 inches long and some of the larger discus I have eat them whole. I usually chop them up int 1/2inch size or so though.

has anybody just feed azoo discus pellet's[red and blue].i was woundering about growth rate ???.i've been working alot so i have been feeding azoo 3-4 times a day and 1 feeding of red worms most the time sometimes blood worms a day. so much easier to clean up after , i clean the bottom of my tanks once a day instead of 3-4 times[after each feeding of beef heart]

There are any number of earthworms/redworms available, the 'nightcrawlers are the mature large worms sold for fishing, they come up and crawl about at night after a rain usually to seek out mates, they are huge, 7-9", or more, redworms also come in several sizes, at least, my favorite was a small 2" one I initially got my culture from a supplier in the TFH classified ad section,

they work great for both freshwater and marine fish, of all of the worms they are the easiest to raise, earthworms that is,

for conditioning angels hard to beat.

I feed earthworms / nightcrawlers alot. I do cut them up into very small pieces though. I start by putting a couple in very cold water. This cleans them out. Then I cut them up and into the tank they go. My wilds almost come through the glass for them. As for holding little nasties........I have never had a problem, I do however make sure they do not come out of a lawn that has been fertilized.

bump up for discussion ....

any one feeding this to their fishes in 2012 ? any health issues ? I have read somewhere the life cycle of the tapeworm and earthworm can potentially be a carrier of tapeworm egg (think about dog poops in the park). If you raise your own earthworm then that possibility is reduced but .. still ... ?

I feed earthworm occasionally to my koi but haven't muster the courage to do it with discus yet ... it just seems like an wonderful (and cheap) food source.

I feed my guys red wigglers. I maintain two bins and harvest the smaller ones of the discus. I have had no problem with them.
