RO unit Question?

Does the unit have to keep going 24/7 or can I just use it when I need to and put it away when I don't. this may be a dumb question but it's better to be safe then sorry?

I disconnect all the lines and put the membrane and housing in a large baggie in the fridge. The carbon and string filters can be rinsed and dried out.

So the membrane and housing are they still in tacked or do you take the membrane out of the housing and put both parts in a ziplock? thanks
