Formalin
I have used formalin (37% formaldehyde) at 3 drops per gallon

water. After 8 hours I did a 50% wc. Add extra aeration. Use

good ventilation (it is a carcinogenic to humans)
Temp 84F ( do not use with high temps as oxygen is depleted

with formalin and will be even more depleted with high temps)
I used this for flukes some years ago on discus. Many people

use different treatment schedules. The trick is to get all flukes

that hatch from fluke eggs. Different species of flukes hatch at

different time intervals (depends on temp too).
I treated every third day for 3 treatments with some success

(the fish were breathing better). Today some people are

reporting flukes to be resistant to formalin.
This med did affect the bio filter.
Formalin can be effective in killing external parasites also.

Some people have used formalin as a fungicide. (against

fungus).
1 ml per gallon may be used as a short term bath for 30 to 60

minutes.

For flukes on baby discus:
22 ml formalin per 15 gal water + 5 tblsp salt per 15 gal water

for 1/2 hour bath, then transfer to clean tank with 1 tblsp salt/ 10

gal to help slime coat. temp 88 F in new tank. This is per Cary

Strong at Great Lakes Discus

Hi
What can I do for removing white precipitate (paraformaldehyde) from formalin?
I really confuse. In cold temp. It will be very toxic and in high temp it does so.
How can I use it safety?
can I stor it in plastic bottle?

Then what should I do?
All the batches are the same.
Is the reason for cold weather?
I used it for some GOLD FISH without any problem.

Hi,
paraformaldehyde can't be used on fish or eggs..its highly toxic. This chemical is made when formalin is exposed to cold temperatures> Normally formalin is a clear solution..If Cloudy.(precipated).Then its paraformaldehyde and can not be used. If its clear and the crystals are just on the cap or opening of the bottle...You can wipe these off and then then use the formalin...The key is Formalin should always be clear.
