Hi fellows.
I seem to be having an odd problem.
For some time one by one my adult 6" breeding stock discuses are dieing one by one .
The symptoms are that they "stand on their head", a few days latter they die (sometimes after 8-10 days).
my water is about 900 Ms, no ammonia, no nitrite, low nitrate. I change a lot of water weekly. temp is 28 constant.
oxygen levels are high.
So far I mainly lost leopards and oriental leopards, and a red or two.
Can anyone be so kind as to shed some light on this bad phenomenon?

Could be constipation, more likely bacterial infection. Do discus look bloated? Have you tried Epsom Salt (magnesium sulfate)? CAn you get Kanacyn or other antibiotic?

Have they recently been treated with any medications?

Thanks for your answers.
the fish display no external simptoms, and are not constatated, or bloated.
the fish look good and their are no white seces.
there are no holes in the head.
i can guess ,that it is an infection in the brain...
what do u think ?

Hi,
I agree with Carol,
Most likely bacteria.

Use an antibiotic.

Kanamycin sulfate may work.

I had the same problem the fish show no external signs and then they headstand and after a while die. I live in the caribbean and I tried increase water changes, but I believe a strong antibiotic would have to be the way to go. If any do recover keep them seperate from the other fish for 3 or so months as they can carry the disease for a long time. one of mine recovered and started swimming straight, I placed him back and then he and everyone else started back and died. Good luck keep us posted we can beat this one I'm sure.

Hi

As you know antibiotics are up for debate on effectiveness in water.

I have read on injecting the fish with antibiotics, this
method my prove better.

For one

Injectable Penicillin G Procaine 300,000 unit strength suspension Sub. Q or I.M.

As well as Tylosin. See link

http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/vetdrugs-medsvet/tylosin_fact_sheet_november2002_e.html

And

Syringe - 3 cc with 25 x 5/8 needle can also be bought.

Find someone who knows location to hit. I think the Sub Q (just below skin) would work, however check with someone who has done this.

Barron :)
