Greetings,
I'm usually just a lurker. I been out of the hobby since 1998. I'm back now. I started getting out all the books I've acquired about discus in the past. I have a total of 12 books. Going thru, I have stmbled upon the National Geographic issue of May 1960 about discus. Reading it again, It's funny how most of us take for granted all the tribulation that a person went thru to be successful in this hobby. They knew so little but thru their perseverance we are now able to enjoy this fish.

I was helping a friend move today, he sold his house. Up in his attic we found a stack of magazines from the previous owner. He had a huge collection of National Geographic Mags, including several well preserved issues from 1930's. One of them contains an extansive article on "the new & exciting American hobby" of "toy tropical fish." Some of the species covered are angels, some tetras and others. I'm planning to scan it next week and post here. It is quite interesting.

O,
Look for the 1960 May issue. This issue talks about discus in particular. It mentions the trouble they had with breeding discus in captivity.

I saw that issue while we were staying at a cabin up in Yosemite many years ago. I knew then that it was fate. I was born in May, 1960! It was an interesting article. I think they refered to the parents secreting milk from their skin that the babies ate. I would love to read it again. Paul.
