Why do companies sell parts for R/O units, if you yourself could not make one? I'm on well water so I'd need TFC unit which usually runs about 30-40 bucks more per unit. If you can buy the individual chambers, could it be done? I figure as long as you retain enough pressure it should work, am I totally crazy becuase it wouldn't be worth it?

randall on the board builds them and will sell them so cheap there really isn't a need to build your own, he does build his and builds them well using quality parts.
when your ready for one contact him, he has a post in the buy, sell, trade section selling hanna products.

Samurai,
It's easy to build an RO unit yourself.

www.wateranywhere.com has the parts you need. You can follow the Basic Assembly thread in water works for more details.

You're not saving big $$ though. Probably about $25-40 at the most when you figure in shipping. If you compare to the Big name rip-off units, there's large savings, but beyond that the little guys can save you the $$

Feel Free to IM for more details on DIY..
