If a plant turns black?

I have this Unknown plant i got from my LFS and it is turning black what does it mean, not enou8gh light, heat, too much heat, too much light, is it burnt, not enough co2?

first thing i'd do if it were in my tank is check to make sure it's not an algae growth on the plant.

then i'd do a water change.
then i'd probabaly increase the lighting
then i'd try to find a picture of the plant you have on the internet so you can find out what kind water parameters it needs.
