I don't know if I like the looks of it, but if my Discus will prosper from it I will live with it. ;D

I think that's a very good idea...

It took me awhile to convert over myself. A planted tank can be beautiful and the discus seem to love it. But IF a problem arises, it hits fast and hard.

It took me a while to adjust too, but now there's no looking back! :)

Good move, you won't regret it. It is so much easier to keep the tank clean.

Excellent choice. I have kept fish in bare bottom tanks, heavily aquascaped tanks with hundreds of pounds of rockwork, planted tanks and just about everything in between.

Bare bottom tanks are cleaner, easier to maintain and (in my own crazy opinion...) actually more attractive than the others. You just look at the fish - unobstructed and well illuminated. What's more beautiful than that?

If all u are seeing is the boring BB... the shelf underneath, or worst the floor (depending on stand) you could try things like;
*painting the bottom of the tank(outside)
*place some decorative lining underneath eg. backgroundpaper, giftwrapping paper ect..
*spary-on sand or gravel effect (outside), I think the brand is called 'Stone Creations'....

The more experienced members will advise how. ;D

my discus took around 2 days to get adujsted, so if u see any pushing, liplocking going on ...Its normal, they are re-establishing territory. Everything will be the same[...only a whole lot cleaner] ;D

i was one of those who was determined to have a planted discus tank. i possted several times and ignored the warnings. it was to be just like a tank in the books ::) ::) ::). i found my wilds were getting sick alot. nothing serious but cloudy eyes etc. i am in the middle of switching my 360 gal tank to a bare bottom. its going to take a while but my wilds were moved to a 120 and doing great. now i have to catch the 50 others. bare bottom for me if its discus.

Hi, I have a 55 gallon with 6 discus..I have been reading quite a few of these posts and decided to get rid of the undergravel filter.. So Now I am going bb.. But did decide to keep serveral decorations just because I liked them and didn't want to part with them. I have two hot and one has a bio wheel, which I had running for 5 weeks.. But now I am getting the cloudy water effect.. I have checked for amonia and nitrates and they are at the normal level.. How long will the cloudy water last. The discus are all 2 to three inches.. When I went bb. I kept most of the water I had orginally. But did add about 1/3 with water I had aged for 24 hour plus used no chlorine.. Does that normally happen when someone changes to bb.. I mean am I going through the new tank syndrome.. ???

My water was crystal clear after I went barebottom and still is several days later.

Hi Casiopia:
You may be having a bacterial bloom or perhaps it is just particulates from stirring up the gravel as it was removed.

Continue monitoring the ammonia levels and do extra water changes if you get a reading. The new filters should be fully cycled after 5 weeks in your tank.

Yup, BB is the way to go, and if you really want it to be some what decorated, I guess you can add in plastic plants, right?
