I was wondering if my discus could live a happy life in a stable ph of 7.8. If they can't , please give me some advice to lower it. Give me some links.

My pH is 7.8 - no need to lower it for growing out juvenile discus. When you are ready to breed the hardness may have to be lowered with an RO.

Yep same here PH of 7.8. My fish do fine! They even lay eggs in that PH and the only problem I have seen are lower hatch rates cause the water's to hard. Thats where the R/O comes into effect.

Should i soften the water??? The hardess is about 25. Will the softening salt kill my plants??

You don't need to do anything to your water at this time unless you have a breeding pair. Leave it alone for now.

You have to use Reverse Osmossis - not a water softener. You want the GH to be between 3 - 8. Buy a GH/KH test kit and see what your water is now - you may not have to do anything . . . .
