:o :o :o Hi all, just read 'bout the Texas Blue Gill, having Prozac (fluoxetene) in tissues in the lakes down there! Interesting problem demonstrating the effects of "flushing" medications either directly or via urine in treated individuals into our streams & ponds. Don't know if this link will work;

Be aware, Dottie ::) :o ::) :o ::)

Hi Dottie,
meds and hormones down the drain and in human urine is a real concern.. seems many of these things are getting thru the treatment plants and into the ecosystems. :-\

Makes you really wonder.

I just think those Texas wives have found an exceeding clever way to mellow out their fishermen! ;)
Now that I know what's in the water, that explains the behavior when I put on the Lavalamp near the tank and put on Tom Jones. That algae IS about the color of a shag I had in the 70's...

Dotti if this wasnt posted by you I wouldn't even have read it. Having said that I think its probally a lot of crap. Bryan Brooks sounds like hes looking for funding. Imagine how much of a drug would have to find its way into a lake to show up in a fish. I'm not saying theres no chance but I think it's very unlikely. Its either a small lake or one happy town. ;D WAKE UP AMERICA! JMO Rich

I have to agree with Rich. Unless someone is directly dumping massive amounts of prozac into the water this claim is shaky at best. Prozac is metabolized by the body (liver) and only 19% is excreted by the kidneys in any form at all. half-life is 1 to 3 days.

:bounce: Geez Rich, I wasn't trying to start a :flame: or disappoint you, just calling attention to some things that can affect our fish. I would hope that B. Brooks, (guess he's an associate professor, not Dr or Phd??) has truly shown that their (fish) tissues do contain the drug as he says "below therapeutic levels". This would mean that he has measurable level of some import. Wouldn't it be great if some of our Seattle ppl could attend that Geological Society (of America) meeting next month & really see what is going on?? Perhaps this isn't a big deal, but I do think we should "be aware".

Debbie, he did say "a small lake", & referred to the poor capability of our filtering systems to prevent the influx of these chemicals into the environment. & he does have to prove with numbers & evidence that this problem exists, & is not "shaky at best". So, I hope both of you are right & this is a sham, but it's up to the scientific community to sort this out & protect the public. I also am aware of the fact that the newsfolk can blow anything out of proportion. Even fish!!
C'est la vie!!!!!

lol, Dottie ;D ;D 8) 8)

Hi Dottie. I posted my reply right around the time I was watching the video of the Tyco execs multi million dollar party for his wife paid for by Tyco. I was feeling a little punchy at the time. These days I question everyones motives and thats unfortunate. It just seems there are more people trying to exploit the system or just plain steal from it than I can ever remember. Its becoming more of a problem with well educated people who are allready leading a better than average life. This isnt the place to rant and rave about it. I was just trying to figure out why this guy was looking for a solution to a problem that currently has no symptoms. Who knows for sure. If we had someone looking for PCB's in stripped bass years ago that problem may have been avoided. Rich
