hi everyone
my brother in law makes my bh mix for me and puts in some carrot for it's natural carotine....my fish always leave the carrot till last cause i don't really think they like it very much....
my question is....i have a juicer at home that i use when making fresh juice....would it work if i juiced the carrot instead and added the juice to my bh mix? would this work? has anyone tried it before??
thanks for your jhelp guys!!!!

Good question Matt. I personally feel that the juice would just muck up the water more. If the carrot could be ground up finer it think that would be better. I have always had trouble getting carrots ground up that fine. They seem to want to stay in chuncks. I wonder if boiling before-hand would help.

Cooking carrots also helps the carotine release easier. I read that somewhere ;D

My understanding is that the carotine in carrots is not in a usable form for discus to digest. Basically it is just passing through their digestive system and coming out as waste. Feed shrimp instead.

Interesting post.
I might suggest freezing the carrot before grinding.
Works well for the other veggies I add.

Hi..
I think that boiling the carrot should be kept short, otherwise nutrients would be destroyed by the heat or passed into the water.

Hi,
Caution should be used with carrots due to the high fiber content. Discus really don't do well with that amount of fiber. Blockages may occur.
I often add tomatoe paste to my beef heart mix as an alternative... but if you are looking for a natural color enhancer...
try paprika or marigold flowers...I use about 2 tablespoons paprika per 5 lb beef heart.

Al, correct as always.
Everything I add to the beefheat is ground very finely. Very fine.
Paprika, great stuff. I have even added green and yellow peppers.
And of course - GARLIC.

What I have done in the past is save all my prawn and shrimp shells after a great feast, put it in the oven till it is all dry, grind it into a pwder and presto! instant powder form of orange pigment that can be added to your BH. I have tried the carrot, the paperika and the home made dried shrimp shell and it all worked! good luck
