HI everyone,

I have a pair of melons and i have found that they are recently displaying early signs of mating behaviour. Im just running out of ideas for what i can do to try and trigger some action.

The tank temp is 30.5 ph is 7.1 , and they are in a 270 litre bb tank with some small neons that i used to age the tank many many months ago. I figured that the discus would just eat them in due course.

Recently I started doing say 15 % water changes with straight tap water , cold every 2 days. It does frisk them up and they seem happy with it.

For 1 week now i have been feeding live CBW e.g better quality fresh food to encourage spawning.

Can any experienced breeders out there suggest a schedule of sorts of what I should be doing, or what you would actually do. I feel like doing some much bigger water changing but am hesitant in that i dont want to lose what I have achieved.

thanx in advance

lower down the temp to 28 deg C and more live foods, more clean water, do not play with ph

Hi

Today i did a small w/c and lowered temp of tank to 28.

Interesting times. Male is displaying typical flirting behaviour and still hangs about the heater cable. Ive seen the female clean that same spot too but not today. She appears more inetersted in food today.

The plan is to leave it at this for 7 days and then return it to normal temp if nothing occurs, Ill try the heavy feeding too.

ok, now start with large water changes, as much as you can do with the fish in the tank. that's the best trigger you can do!

ps: if you end up going back to normal temp, raise it slightly higher than normal, then wait a week and do a large wc. like 50-75% and lower the heater back down to the suggested temps given here.

Did you ever think to leave them alone and when they are ready, mother nature will take over.

I'll take that on board thanks limige.

One of them is definetly in the breeding mode, just a matter of getting the other in the same mood.

Miles I appreciate your point of view but no.

hehe

Are there a variety of spawning substrates? i.e. cones, flower pots, PVC tubes? I have read that if you give them a choice., they will finally chose one. good luck!

Nick for once i agree with lee the best thimg for you to do is get in the tank and show them whos the man. And give the female a kiss for me.

haha

yes for those who have not seen my other thread, they did breed, now its just a matter of getting them to stop eating those eggs. :)

Lee a third party always spices things up. I think you and adr would make a lovely pair with Vic, from VIC DISCUS, hehe
