I have 5 Discus. They have all established a hierarchical order. The 4th ranked fish is very agressive toward no. 5, obsessively chasing him most of the time. The behavior intensifies during feeding time. Got to a point where no. 5 no longer eats and hides at the corner all the time. I put him in the hospital tank with some salt to nurse him back to health. When he became healthy and started eating again, I put him back in the main tank. But the bullying remained.
So I tried putting the bully- no.4 in the hospital tank for about a week and then reintroduced him to the pack. By this time, no.5 had become more confident and is no longer as afraid of no.4. The hierarchy remains the same but no 4 is less agressive and no 5 is more confident. Its been more than a week and everyone is eating, no one is hiding. I guess it works!
