View Full Version : Eggs not hatching

I have a pair (1 1/2 yrs old.) One is a PB and the other a golden tangerine, that have spawned every 10-12 days over the last 6 months, each day a few eggs go white. Each day the parents remove the white eggs.
After 5-6 days all the eggs are gone.
I've had 3 opportunities to watch them spawn, usually around 6-8pm, both the female and the male seem to be doing their part right. When I've caught them spawning I usually shut-down my Aqua-Clear 300 and leave the sponge filter and airstone running for the night, and then start it up in the morning.
These are my water parameters:
Out of tap: no chlorine or chloramine (I have municipal water-town wells)
PH: 7 (always dead on)
KH: 50 ppm
GH: 50 ppm
Ammonia & Nitrate & Nitrite: negligable (doesn't register with kits)
Temp: 82 degrees F

Tank water parameters are almost identical
I have tried daily 10%, 20% water changes, every other day 20%, 33% water changes, twice a week 20%, 33% water changes, and weekly 33%, 50% water changes. ( I have an almost automatic water changing system)
I usually use Malachite Green to control fungus, and have almost no problem with fungus.

They are fed angel/discus flake from HBH, and almost daily frozen baby krill or live adult brine shrimp. I've tried several beefheart recipes, which didn't seem to change a thing.

I also have the same problem with a pair of angels. Although the angels spawn every 14-16 days

Neither the Angels or the Discus are proven pairs.
I've bred many african and S.american cichlids.

If anybody has any suggestions please help!!!! ???

Your male either is not fertile or is not doing his job. Do you see the male running over the eggs with his tube touching the eggs?

I'd try a different adult male.

Yes, I've seen the male running his tube over the eggs, he usually makes two passes for each pass of the female, after the female has laid a few tracks of eggs.

I would try another male but I don't have one.

I mentioned the angels because I am having the same exact problem with them.

Thanks for the quick reply

This maybe a dumb question but what about the water circulation being too strong, too much current? ??? Sperm doesnt have a chance to come in contact with the egg and gets swept away? ???

Just a thought!

That's why when I've caught them spawning I've turned off the AC300 power filter.
I am hesitant in turning off the sponge filter and the seperate air stone, because of oxygen depletion at 82 degrees.
Does anyone know the rate of oxygen depletion in a 29-gal? (How long without air stone or sponge filter running before I will run low on oxygen for he fish?
I've lost two discus before to a 45 min power outage, (I since hooked up backup power to the air stone).
It usually takes them about 15-20 minutes of passes over the slate during spawning, would turning off all air to the tank cause issues over this time?
I usually place the spawning slate on the opposite side of the tank from the sponge filter and airstone.

Or am I cursed with an infertile male :-\

I had an identicle situation as you. Every 6 days for 6 months, and nothing. I thought I had an infertile male also.

Then, after I had amost given up, WIGGLERS!!!

I think your male is just not mature yet. Some take up to 2 years to reach maturity...

Give him some more time before giving up...

BTW, you said your kh and gh are 50? I would think more like 5...

Rob,
Your fine if you turned off the filter! The sponge and air stone probably are not causing that much current so I would not turn them off! ;)

Like Brian mentioned, may be that they are young yet! Patience is a virtue! ;)

BIG Thanks to everyone who replied! ;D
You guys/gals are great!

I'll just have to be patient, I guess and see what developes.

I'll let you know when I get past this hump, and hopefully post pics too!

Thanks

Just an update:

I got wigglers!!!!!!!

I got wigglers!!!!!!!

Finally, I just needed patience, about 6 months worth.

To all those having problems with eggs not hatching, 'just a little patience, ya , ya, a little patience.'

Thanks to everyone.

Here's a pic of the Father and the wigglers.
It took me about 20 pics to get this one good pic.

Congratulations Rob! I thought I saw several pigeons in the first couple of photos, but no pigeons in the last two photos?

Thanks

I couldn't get good pictures of the two tanks they are in (about 30 discus total) I kept all the barred ones in this tank and moved the others.

If I get good pics of the pigeons I'll post them.

OK, that explains it. As they grow you will want to sort them by size.
