Crystals's on a roll here, and I can't keep up.

She is currently 'feeding' about 50(now ) 7day freeswimming fry, and she has gone and laid another 100+ eggs on the bottom of the tank. What should I do after all the effort I went to (see upset apple cart in breeding section), I dont want her to now eat her fry.

Hi Michelle,
At a guess I would say you have stimulated her with the water changes. I had this problem once and from now on I make sure the fresh water is the same temp as the tank water never had a problem since. At a guess I would get rid of the eggs.
Just spoke to Rod get rid of the eggs.

Matt,
You already got good advice from Walter and Phil. There is nothing more to add at the moment. Just increase your light and see what happens in the next few weeks. It is better to change one parameter at the time... otherwise you might end up with algae.

Regards, Ari :)

Mattzilla
03-30-2004, 08:52 PM
thanks ari...i am going to buy a stronger light some time soon and see if that works....

it's odd though, the plants that are further away from the light source are growing the best....
i would have thought that it would be the opposite if there was not enough light in the tank

what do you think?

matt

Multiclone
03-30-2004, 09:54 PM
Hi Matt,
The plants you are after are called Philodendrons you can obtain them from any nursery. They come in many different forms. One word of caution though. I have read a few post where they say to take a cutting and stick it in the tank. The only problem is their sap is toxic. I would take the cutting and place it in a glass of water until it grows roots then place it in the tank. This way the cut is healed and no sap will leach into the tank. Even though I haven't read or heard of any fish keeling over IMO better to be safe than sorry.
They are shade lovers and will thrive in a tank with normal room lighting.

Matt,

It will all depends on what kind of plants they are. Different plants have different light requirements. Even different anubias might need different condition to thrive. The hardest thing is to find a balance so that all the plants are looking healthy.

I find that either you go bb or planted tank all the way. I used to have anubias on driftwood in one of my tank, and I actually find it hard to keep the plants looking nice - they are either all dying or covered with algae. It is much easier when I actually plant the whole tank with substrate and all. I don't have CO2, so I stick with heavy root feeder and slow grower plants, like enchinodorus, anubias, aponogeton, nymphea. My tank is not as green as the ones with CO2, because there is nothing better than those stem plants to create gorgeous planted tanks... but I am happy enough with my tanks and my discus are happy. Considering my water is too soft, it is far too risky to go CO2 way... Maybe one day...

HTH.

Regards, Ari :)

This is only their 2nd spawning the first time they ate the eggs early. This time they are fine - so far that is.
Yet the "murderers" a pair of PB have laid 23 times and eaten them all as they hatch. Eve is a lot bigger and was beating him up and I nearly took him out but with past experience if they get to the hatching stage then the free swimming stage they settle right down as a pair. That is what has happened with these 2 they are a perfect pair now. OOPS nearly forgot - so far.
As for the colour of the fry I haven't got a clue. This is what I love the most about raising fry watching them grow and seeing what they turn into. We never know what we will end up with.

Hi multilcone, and Matt

You can also use Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)aureum for the golden version. It is often called Devils Ivy, however read the botanical name because other plants are sold under the common name. It appears to me to be slightly more manageable than the Philodendrons that have always grown larger for me. Don't know if it is toxic or not!!

HTH, Lesley

Matt,

was just hunting around for something and came across this site - it would appear that Pothos is not poisonous and this link is not indicating that aureum means golden.

The site says that at least the species it mentions of Philodendrons are poisonous, however, like Geoff I have used Philos. without ill effect.

How so much can change in a few hours.
There has been all out war between Eve and her BD mate. I went into the fishroom to find them beating hell out of each other. Initially I thought it was a passing spat however they would rest for a minute then resume the battle. I was in a dilema as what to do because each fish had a mass of fry attached and it would have been impossible to catch one without the fry as they were trying to re-attach all through the battles. Also I was afraid there may be too many fry to raise for 1 fish, there would be at least 150 of them. Anyway I decided to partition the tank with 'egg-crate' which worked well for a whole 15 minutes. The fry were swimming back and forth ok and I thought this may work ha ha. He became increasingly agitated and began ignoring his share of the brood and I began to see murder in his eye and when he gulped down a fry and spat it out in pieces I took him and the partition out. Eve swam over picked up his fry and all is at peace again - so far.
Following are a few pics of 3 generations of fry I have moved into a 7' tank there are about 100 of them ranging from 3 1/2 months to 1 month. Doing this has freed up 2 4' tanks.

what else do you have in your tank with your alencer?
Is that a bristlenose catfish? What is the blurry thing in the bottom corner?

I have been wanting to put my catfish back in with my pair with fry, they are 12 days freeswimming now and the bbs makes such a mess, do you think a small bristlnose would eat them?

I can't believe how much they have grown. I went away for the weekend, they survived(mostly) grandma and 3 children looking after them, and when I got back they have doubled in size!!!

I think Stuart may be having daytime snacks as I am sure there are now only 46 fish left!! He was fighting with Crystal on Friday and so I separated them but he kept butting the barrier so I let him go and he seemed better, but I will be keeping a close eye on him.

When should I remove Stuart and Crystal? If I remove just Stuart will they remain a pair?

Hi Michelle,
Good to see they survived the weekend ok I never had any doubts. ;).
Once they start eating bbs they do grow like weeds. I haven't had any experience with adding catfish to the tank with fry ( I am a one fish man ). However I would say no as the parents will be protective still and may consider the intruder a threat which it probably will be.
If one of them is showing signs of aggression I would take him/her out of the tank completely, yes they will remain a pair when you return them to the same tank.
As for taking the fry from the parents some people say 14 days some 21 and some a month. I like to leave mine together a month with at least one of the parents. Or at the very least until the fry are starting to eat BH etc. Even though they can be taken away once they start eating bbs IMO they are being weaned too early and will miss out on the added nutrition from the parents that's why I leave them with the parents. Also it gives me some added flexibility with feeding times as they are still getting parental supplements. Once you take the fry away you will have to feed regularly.
Oh! I nearly forgot you may be overfeeding with the bbs I did the same thing initially. Feed them a 1/4 of what you are feeding now and keep an eye on their bellies, you will see them go pink and bulge with the bbs keep adding bbs until you see this then you will know how much to feed them as they grow bigger just up the amount. I use this method still with 3 month old fish.

Geoff..

Well i think i joined this a bit too late :o 3 threads and still kicking strong. Well firstly ill introduce myself, iam scott (another one) from melbourne, se suburbs. I been keeping dickies for about a year. I am just setting up a few more tanks and looking for some good breeders, is heart breaking that Aquarium Industries is so close to me but i cant buy from them. :'(
Anyone all the discus i have so far are from Slippery little Suckers in sydney. Not bad but iam after something different. And i need some partners for the fish i already have, iam after a red snakeskin and a pearl pigeon. Also looking at anything really iam open to new things..
But if someone can let me know of some good breeders that would be great. Melbourne seems to have a lack of them, must be the inconsistant weather.
I know iam a bit late (3 threads late!!) but i am here now..
Hope i can get some good contacts as i got a few tanks to fill..

Off to Malaysia on Tuesday for a week.

My fry survived my weekend away with Grandma looking after the house, now lets see if they survive a week with my husband (the discus money-pit hater). Bad timing to go away but who knew the fish would decide to spawn when they did.

Does anyone know how to get into see some of those famous discus farms? I think it would be a great opportunity to see them in action.

Anyone want me to bring back some take-away for them?? ;D ;D

Well like most fish , and with alot of african cichlids they are eatin by the natives of africa.. just like we fish out rivers lakes and oceans for food as so do they with what they have... i talked with a guy around a year or so ago, and he had a guge tank full of zaire blue frontosas almost the same as vistamikes tank.. well it broke when he was at the store and when he came home it was to late to bring any of them back .. so being a fish eater he was he filetd them and ate them all.. he said they were pretty good and tasted like catfish... and if you have eatin any flathead cats from the states you would know how good they taste...

eat away!!!!!!!

Want the names - lol

Well,

the 2 Golden PB's are from Rod Lewis, theyre names are Jack & Rod

The Cobalt is named Bubba

The BDs are Cary & Cherub

The striated PB - is Pidge

The blue turqs with the huge spawn of 3 are Timmy & Jemma

The brown based (not sure of her strain) is Lucky

Geoff also has a pair of mine posted with eggs - Nobby & Pril - hes being an uncle for a few months - ive been wanting to breed with them myself - but dont have the room.

Ill post the Alencers later with Castle De Ping. I have names for all the bettas but wont bore you with that - lol

A nice bunch of kids there April. Obviously Kerry has sent you some of the water we have here?
Kerry I think an 8' tank may be bit small for those 3 monsters. Also I think that tank you have stripped down needs a complete clean and wipe out. You had better bring those fish up here while you do it. While you are at it you should do the Alencer tank as well and bring them up as well for us to "look" after. ;D

Geoff

ecc.oldlady
04-11-2004, 07:47 PM
Hi Geoff

well here is the latest on my golden scorpion babbies.

I took out Stuart and he totally terrorised my community tank(again), then crystal started acting weird. Floating sideways and non responsive, the light was flickering so I turned it off and she recovered so I think she may have been "hypnotised" by it. :(
Crystal then began getting annoyed at having to do all the work without her husband to help, and would flick the babies off and try to get away to a moments peace, (i wish), with no luck of course, so I returned Stuart for some R and R, again they fought, and the next couple of days a few babies died for no apparent reason.
I ended up removing Crystal to the community tank , everyone is happy.

We have stablised whatever was causing fish to die, maybe it was not fully hatched bbs, would that kill them???

I have 35 remaining. ;D

All growing well, Stuart happy, Crystal happy, all the others happy, now I am going away for 10 days, and my husband will be looking after them all :-\ :-\ :-\

He (like all spouses as I can gather, not keen on my discus money pit as he calls it) is not happy about having to do all the water change and feeding routine, but can see little $20 notes swimming around in my bb tank so is willing to give it a try.

When I gat back I expect they will be huge, and ready to go out on there own.

I do not have a third tank to grow them out in so should I leave them in the 2 ft with daily water change, or put them in my 4ft community tank with weekly water change?

Michelle

yippy
04-11-2004, 07:49 PM
Michelle, Im not sure if Lucky is wild based - I bought her because i felt sorry for her - she was about 1 inch and the last one left - all on her own - shes laid with Pidge - but in the planted tank - so Ill wait and see how the alencers turn out - if ones a male - ill try and breed some with them. Rod has been here and seen her, he may know - i have no idea - but shes pretty :gorgeous:

As for the the Inner Sanctum of Rod Lewis - just do what I do - lob on his doorstep - WITH BAGS !!!!!!!

Michelle,
Sounds you have found the balance with the parents ok. Be careful about feeding the fry "off" BBS I did this recently with the BD fry the BBS were on the edge, the water was beginning to smell and was becoming cloudy which is a sign of bacteria. I lost 2 overnight plus 3 weren't too good but have recovered. I have learnt my lesson " if in doubt chuck them out".
As for the community tank I have no idea about them. Kerry or Rod are probably more able to help there. The only trouble I can foresee is they will become a snack and a possible pollution problem with the extra mouths to feed.

Ozone. glad you popped in. keep on popping in..their all goofy around here..good fun..
why dont you aussies book a chat night for first monday or whaterver day of each month or somethin..so everyone knows..and its not every week. besides..your cold and blustery winter is setting in soon...brrrrrrrrrrr. you may need to stay in and yabber.

yippy

Theres only one goofy person around here - and that person isnt an Aussie - but Im not mentioning any names. :-X

Our cold and blustery winters are alot warmer than a Canuk summmer - lol - so we dont need to stay inside and yabber - we can still bask in the sun etc. :P

Good to see you pop in Ozone - hang around and show us some of your :fish:

Geoff, youre starting to learn bad habits off Pril - trying to clean eveyone out of their fish :spank:

i may pop up on Sunday if youre not doing anything - I WILL bring a bucket - for Eve. :P Mum wants to come up and see your greenhouses - so ill just stay in the fishroom while your down the hill and "take a few pics" ;)

Hi April,

Yes I'm a baaaaad boy, got all consumed in work and got out of the habit of checking in with you guys. It's no excuse I know and you can kick my butt, ( this invite is only for April guys, by the time it hits me from Canada it shouldn't hurt to much),

I spent a fair bit of time working in Singapore for the last 3 months of last year and had to go back once so far this year, On top of that my wife Sandra has had a operation which put her out of action for 6 weeks ( she has recovered well) so the last 6 months has been very hetic.

Everything is back to normal now and I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone.

I think a chat night would be great, first Monday of the month sounds Great.

Anyway take care April, Talk soon

Thanks Matt,
It has been a long slow grind with plenty of mistakes made and somethings I would change with our setup, but we are moving in the right direction.
We have just ordered 2- 1,500 litre fry grow out tanks 1.6 x 1.6 x 1.2 metres it will be interesting to see how it turns out. Also it is time for us to split the system in 2 (a) breeding (c) growing on - harder water and higher ph etc.
One other thing we are looking at is solar heating. On doing some figures we estimate we can become totally self efficient with heating for around 2K, our power bill last quarter was $1.700 and it will only get worse heading into winter. I will post as we progress.

Geoff
