Hi,

I have 7 Discus in my 90 gallon tall show tank.

Recently some of them are acting weird. They act as if they are being electrically shocked. This behavior lasts anywhere from 5-30 seconds, when done they just go about they’re business of being a fish.

Does anyone know if this is a “normal” behavior for Discus?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi,

Well I think that's normal, it's like when you feel cold, you start shaking.... ;D mine do the same
Hope this helps.

Thanks Joao,

I thought of that too but my tank is 85 degree's (?).

Glad to hear mine are not the only ones doing it! ;D

I'm new to these fish, I was told 85 degree's was a good temp but you never know until you ask.

I also raise Koi and they are bullet proof. I use my garden hose to clean they're tank! When they get too big it's off to the pond.

Thanks again,

Steve

Nick,

They do rub up against the plants sometimes. Not much though.

By any chance would this be the "shivering" breeding behavior??? ;D

yes and no, it can mean breeding behavior or maybe just showing off to the others. nothing to worry about though.

hey steve
how old are the fish and what size are they??
do you have a breeding cone in the tank if not put one in. it can just be a pvc pipe 3/4 of the height of the tank. do some big and small water changes daily, put the temp down to 28d and have the ph at 6.8 and you may get lucky and get some fry.

thanx jarryd

My fish are between 3 & 4 inches so I would guess that makes them less than a year old (?).

I have terracotta pots in my tank that house live plants. I once had driftwood and gravel in the tank but Carol suggested I get rid of it.

If I am lucky enough to get breeders wouldn't they use the existing pots?

I only have one tank. In it are 20 Neon Tetras and 6 Flame Tail Tetras along with the Discus. Can they all stay in the same tank if I get fry?

I'm very new to this hobby so please bare with me.

Discus like upside down flower pots to lay eggs on. Few people have success raising fry in a community tank. If they are pairing you will see two together all the time and claiming a section of the tank. the other discus won't be allowed in "their" area.
