I am happy to say that tonight there is a cloud of fry successfully attatched to the parents, both Curipera.

I am encouraged by the care that this pair have shown to the spawn, this is their first.

Upper Canada,

Are you in toronto? Me too. I have four curipera myself, two from about the spring time, and two just arrived yesterday.

How did you do it? That is, what is your set up, and water parameters? What do you do to our Toronto water to lower the ph?? To breed curipera this is my goal! Where did you get the curipera from?

congrats Bob!

can't wait to see what you do with the RSG'S ;)

for those of you that don't know Mr. Garside, he has many, many years of discus breeding experience and a fishroom with over 3600 gallons of aquaria :o

Congratulations. Bob. You've finally done it. How many?. I only had about 30 fry for the last time.
You can claim the first successful spawn in Canada. Mine was a cross Curipera X Leopard SS. How's the Jetapu? Any spawning activities?

YYZ: Bob doesn't use T.O water. He has his own well water. Liquid rock.

Thank you for your kind comments.

My wife has been telling me to get a digital camera for so long now that when I said I would buy one today she just laughed.

M......I live just outside of Barrie, just north of Toronto. The paramaters were pH 5.0 and 185 microsiemens. ( yes 185 )
An R/O will give you control of your hardness.

Jimmy...I do not know how many yet but perhaps when I attempt the photo I will have a better opportunity to see.

Bob: I have an extra Canon powershot digital if you need. I've never talked about the Curipera fry until now. I have not been lucky with them. For some unknown reasons. They just die between 1"- 3". I was thinking of the crossed genes. Document what you have and we can compare notes.

These Curipera have been in my water for about 18 months, time enough for them to become comfortable with their enviroment and food. I feel this may have contributed to their spawning in water significantly harder than we would assume, ie. less than 60 microsiemens.

I thought I should point this out for the benefit of those who may have recent arrivals and plan to breed them. They may or may not have success at 185 ms. I cannot say. Mine may well be 18 months older.

I would welcome any discussion on this point, agreeing of course that evolutuionary characteristics are not quickly changed.

Furthermore, and this will be interesting to see, will these offspring readily accept the higher conductivity when they reach breeding age. Maintaining low pH and low conductivity requires careful attention.

If this ground has already been covered elsewhere I would appreciate a link.

Bob,

How did you maintain a ph of 5?

Ok so no more posturing...

Who has had a successful batch of curipera? Anyone?

That should answer your evolutionary characteristic question concerning tank breeding.

Bob what are your plans with these fish? Can I arrange a visit with you?

You may have a goldmine on your hands. Oliver gets about 20 or so per year.

I purchased a camera yesterday and have some pictures now.

I will attempt to post some today/tonight as time here permits. However I anticipate getting them from the camera to the forum may be fun.

Is that two Curipera? Frank

Carol_Roberts
12-23-2003, 11:48 PM
Both have the blue "C" around the eye . . . . isn't that the defining marking?

12-24-2003, 12:49 AM
Not only the inverted "C". around the eyes. Lot's of curipera crosses caught from the lower basin in Medeira area has that features. The most important part is the short 45 degree line within the tail end of the loop.

Good job
Looking at your pictures is just about like looking at one of my tanks.
I now have not only curipera x curipera but several curipera crosses going, and have just added 500 gallons for growing them out.
Wish you great luck with the fry.

It will be another six weeks before we move in the new house.
I guess you can tell what had prority, since I am there in the evenings I finished the fish room first so it would be easier to care for them.

Great job. Those are beauties for sure!

Regarding the "so called" curipera 45 degree stripe and the "c" shaped line around the eye. I just took a look at my tank of wild discus and I find it difficult to find one that does NOT have these markings. Clearly i do not own any curipera discus. Why are these marking refered to as characteristic of this particluar discus, when it seems the lines are very common in many wilds?

I must be misssing something? ???
