Because I am relatively new to raising discus you'll have to forgive my ignorance. What does TDS mean and how does it effect discus? Thanks

TDS = Total Disolved Solids

It measures all the soldis disolved in the water. Usually it is spoken of relating to "hardness" which is disolved minerals, like calcium and magnesium, etc. in the water.

It also measures things disolved in the water that do not raise the hardness like salt. So you can get a really high tds reading in soft water full of salt - like with a whole house water softener.
