These are my first Discus. When I bought them 3 months ago, they weren't very colorful and had heavy black vertical bars. Last week, the bars disappeared and their colors have become vibrant. Imagine my joy! The picture shows the difference, taken about 2 months apart. Its reward like this that make you forget about the general maintenance headaches that comes with these fishes.

Great looking fish.
I just got my first 2 almost 2 weeks ago. I can not wait till they get older and hopefully color up as nice as yours.

MonkeeFish, yes they are the same discus. The original picture was taken with the fish facing the opposite direction, I flipped it digitally for better comparison. So what you're actually seeing is the other side of the fish, which may have a slight diff in color. BTW, he grew about 1/2 inch length wise.

What you have there is a standard red turquoise. These classic strains develop their coloration later than the pigeon blood types. The blue highlights start around 3 - 4 months. The red is just beginning to fill in around 12 months. It should get even nicer and the vertical stripes will be mostly gone.

Good luck, Willie

Will the heavy black stripe thru the eye disappear too?

WOW!!! :P

That's a huge difference, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!

The lines will stay there, they can become lighter though. usually the lines will darken when their mood changes, like when they get freighten or are being territorial, etc...

Here's a link on how to remove the vertical bars on discus up to 30 days of age:

In a grown red turq, all the lines will disappear. They will come back when the fish is stressed, but this should not occur with healthy fish. The red turq in the picture is a male tending eggs. A few vertical bars appear when they do this. Unless he's guarding eggs, there's no vertical bars showing.
