Hello,

I purchased a book by Jack Wattley on breeding discus for beginners. He mentions that all of their breeding tanks are only 20 gallons. What are your thoughts on this? He does not go into much detail, so I am wondering what the rest of you know about his breeding set up.

Thanks,

Robert

I don't know much about breeding but I get my discus from Gabe at Wattley's hatchery and they do use only 20g for their breeding pairs and he assures me that these are sufficient. That's what I'm going with when I breed. Just more space efficient.

Wattly does use 20 gallon tanks for his breeder's. But, he has all of his breeder's(the ones in Miami atleast) on a BIG central filtration system. Last time I was down there I think I counted somewhere between 50-60, 20 gallon tanks that are used for the breeder's only. So that would equal about 1000-1200 gallons of water for that many breeder's. I think that 20 gallons are to small for a fully adult discus and the water chemistry is harder to keep stable. I (and many others) prefer to use 29 gallon tanks. They have more room for the fish and the water chemistry is easier to control. HTH

I've gone from 20's to 29's, to 30 breeders and am now using 40 breeders. If you have a good pair, the fries do much better with a larger tank.
