how come discus take so well to living in bare bottom tanks? how come they don't freak out, like most other cichlids when in bare setups? i know that if i were in a bare room i'd prolly go crazy :-\

hi. its whatever they get used to. most of us paint the bottom. or we have styro underneath so they dont see through to the floor.

Most discus are born and raised in a barebottom tank and don't see gravel and plants :o until sent to a pet shop

In the natural habitat of discus (which I am sure most of all the young discus sold at stores have not seen themselves) the water is vast and there is seldom any plants or rocks.

There is in some places bog wood and submerged branches but that is mainly in the wet season when the Amazon floods the forest. Otherwise it is just a vast empty river...

But I agree with Carol, they would have been raised in bare bottom and are more used to that than decorations.

thanks guys, i figured that it had something to do with them being raised in bare bottom setups ;D
also what chong said about the amazon makes sense ;)
