Why all that old talk about Discus-water ?

Hi!

Im keeping things simple, and runs with pH 7.8 and tds about 1500. Im happy with this, and so are my fish.

But im STILL running into people everyday, who says im absoloutly NUTS to keep my Discus in theese values. Howcome ? There must be SOME special reason why everyone (at least where i live) try to get a tds of 300 and a 6.5 pH. Im not talking about breeding - just normal care.

Did i miss anything?

Most all the discus books have published those values.

They must have thought it was high pH making discus sick rather than the lack of water changes.

The online community was where I first learned about water changes and stable pH.
