Please ID my fish......

I don't think it is an albino because of non-pink pupil.

Also not a snow white because the eyes are red...

How old is it? I'd guess snow flake

henryD
03-02-2004, 10:55 AM
It is about 6-8months old.

Good eyes Carol.

It did come in with a group of goldens that I got. (brown based). Which is why I was thinking non pigeon based. If you look at a couple of pictures you can see the golden that was it's sibling. It is alot whiter than the others.

Henry,

Nice fish - you should seriously see about breeding that fish - you might have a really cool mutation on your hands... At the very least you have a nice fish!

Golden based, non-pigeon genes.

definitely a Discus....

It's one I should have kept is what it is. It's a golden, but lacks color. Could be interesting doing crossings with that discus. Non PB, no color, not albino, and should be recessive genes. A lot of possibilities with that discus.

Send it back Henry, I'll replace him with a gold golden for you. ;D

Question --- have you ever seen the fish turn completly dark or show stress bars? If not, they have pigeon blood in them. My guess is they are PB - blood line.
Irrespective of that, it is a nice fish, some goldens will have bleached body color in them, Given the fact that the albinos where filtered out of Goldens, there maybe a remote chance it has one part of albino gene in it, if you have the time and space breed it and cross back a good number of fry back to this guy, in hopes to hit the 25% that may carry the albino gene. If you don't have the time or patience sell it to frank.
What kind is it, It might be a throwback or a mutation, only time will tell, nevertheless it is a nice fish. If you plan to sell it I maybe interested in it too.

Color is usually controlled by more than one gene. An albino has complete lack of melanin (hence a near colorless fish with red eye pupil). In some species of fish and Lizards there is a "xanthistic" form that has the abscence of some pigment genes but not all. This usually results in a white or yellow base color but still retains other markings ( note colors in fins and head markings). I have not seen this in discuss but would suspect it is possible. Just a theory

By xanthistic form, do you mean Xanthochromic? As in the case of a Gold Ram or Gold Severum? I always wondered if there was a Xanthochromic form of Discus.

nice golden henryD.

My explanation of golden and pigeon.

Pigeon
1. black specks on the face, body.
2. tail is normally black
3. Black circle outside the dorsal and anal fin.

Golden
1. No black specks
2. Tail should be clear, no black.
3. No dark circle outside the dorsal and anal fin
4. Red line outside the dorsal and anal fin.

Peter,
Xanthochromic is probably a more accurate word, although I have heard both terms used interchangeably. The Xanthochromic Gold ram or Gold Severum are good examples of what I was tring to postulate.
