Question just came to mind, understand it takes weeks to get bacterial developed on the filters, how do you keep an aged sponge/AC filter ready for when you may need it. Do you keep an extra going in main tank? If so, once it has been used what do you do? Sterilize it then put back on main tank to age for next use, or place it back in main tank as is, assuming meds or time, etc. has shown used sponges to be risk free (no sterilization required?)

Keep in main tank until needed. the nuke wet sponge in microwave for three minutes. Put back in main tank to regrow good bacteria.

Thanks Carol, wouldn't have thought of that. Nuking in microwave would kill off any bacteria, etc. I would have tried bleach, then had problem getting residue out. Any problem with absorbed medicine going back into main tank?

Absorbed medicine is not a problem - bacteria, protozoa, etc. are. That's why the microwave is so good ;D
