My light is 24in but....

If my light is only 24 inches, and my tank is 36, does that mean that in the sides of the tank won't get any light. My tank is a 40g and the light is a power compact 130 watt. Is that enough wattage to light my tank?

That'll depend on a few things - how close to the water surface your light is, the shape of the reflector, etc...

Generally, the sides will be a bit less illuminated, but they'll still be lit. The light should project outward as it hits the bottom; the sides won't be in total darkness. I have used a 20" long Compact Fluorescent 55 watt light over a 30" long tank before and could still grow plants along the sides.
