I am setting up a 90 gallon tank. It will contain 10 discus (currently 3 inches) and a half dozen corys - I plan on keeping these fish in the tank through adulthood. It will be a bare bottom tank. I have an aquaclear 500 for filtration. Do I need to use an additional filter or add an airstone to this tank?

One aqual clear 500 containing two internal sponges will work for a 48inch 90 gallon tank

Thanks for the help. I forgot to mention that I was planning on using 2 sponges in the AC. More than anything, I just wanted to make sure they have enough air.

Hi Brandy,

For that size tank I like to use AC500 and also two Hydrosponges 4 or 5 for extra biological and mechanical filtration and aeration.

:bounce2: :bounce2: I also use 2 sponge filters with the lifeguard micron filter in my 90g. The lifeguard was a leftover from SW days, & so is used here. Today I would use an AC500, so much easier, & that is what I put in my 110g with 2 sponge filters. This way always have that extra sponge filter already cycled for emergencies or another tank, lol, Dottie ;D

For right now I put my cycled HOT Magnum on my 90 gallon along with my uncycled Aquaclear 500. In about a month I will remove the Magnum and just go with the Aquaclear. I will probably get a couple more "backup" sponge filters and put them in there at that point. Do you put the sponge filters in your tank just so they are cycled and ready to use in hospital and QT tanks, or are you putting them in there to help filter the large tank?
