View Full Version : BDs breeding
Hi!
Shot some pics of my recently formed and promising BD pair :D I've had 3 BD for 2 years, all females. I tried to pair them up with different assumed males I have, but with no luck (http://forum.simplydiscus.com//index.php?board=11;action=display;threadid=10465;s tart=0).
But 3 weeks ago I came across an OK BD in a LFS, and it surely looked like a male! I bought it and after a (too) short quarantine I put him together with my nicest BD female. After some fighting they settled in different halves of the tank and they gradually seemed to tolerate each other more and more ... Then there was some flirting and 2 days ago she began laying eggs and he tried to fertilize them. He was fumbling in the beginning but seemed to get it straight after a while. And he must have done something right because some of the eggs turned darker as they approximated 48 hours! After 53 hours the first wigglers have just appeared ... :bounce2:
I is not a large spawn, and about half the eggs turned white. But it is a beginning (I hope) ... Most important IMO is that both parents have shared the fanning of the eggs (the male most of the time, though) and they have not fought at all. Hopefully they will continue like that and share the parental duties peacefully ...
Whish me luck!!!
Enjoy the pics ;) In the first one the female is depositing eggs ...

Congratulations!!! Your first BD fry !!
at 3 days old fry you can feed live baby brine shrimps small amount 3 to 5 time let the fry to learn to eat. Probably a few fry can take one or 2 shrimps. At the 4th days old free swimming fry will eat live BBS.

The fry are 1 week free-swimming today, and have been munching on artemia the last couple of days. I can't believe how fast they are growing ... (My first batch of discus fry ever :D)
Think I will let them go with the parents one more week ... ???

Glad you like the pics :) Here are some more ... ::)
It has been six days since I posted last, and during that time I have removed the female. No fighting, but I felt she got too restless. Maybe she wanted to lay eggs again, and I was afraid that could peril the whole batch ...
I have decided to move the fry to their own tank tomorrow (two weeks old), so today was their last whole day with dad ...
They are consuming a lot of baby brine shrimps and have got quite a reddish tinge from it:
It's soooo sad that you are moving out tomorrow :'( Let's have a ... GROUP HUG!!!
Yes, they are hugging ... :o

great job!! can't wait till mine are ready to spawn.
I'm overwhelmed by the response :o Thank you all :D
The camera I used is Nikon D70, a relatively new digital SLR. The lenses are also Nikon: AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm (kit lens) and AF Micro Nikkor 105mm for the close-ups.
A tip if you are planning to buy a digital camera: Pay more attention to the optics than the mega-pixels ;)
Most pics are actually taken hand-held and under poor light conditions, my "trick" is to shoot loads of photos and pick the acceptable ones ...
For the following close-up I used a tripod though, a must when shooting macros! The light was OK also, but more would of course been better 8) This guy has been one day in its new home (15 days free-swimming):
Super pictures!!!
ADORABLE hug and Baby shot!!

Heya Per,
I couldn't agree more - it's all about good optics. When was the last time you used > 3 megapixels anyway? Whereas good optics are with you for every single shot. And good optics mean you don't need all those pixels for a good photo.
Is there anywhere I can download higher res (or less jpeg compressed) versions of your photos? I'm particularly keen on everyone's favourite, the "hug" photo. ;D
Keep up the excellent work, Per - those are some superb photos.
Cheers!
John
Today the fry are 4 weeks free-swimming, and I think that qualify for some photos :D
They are varying a bit in size, with the average around 1 inch - excluding tail. Not bad I think, considering that I can't get any CBWs here in Norway >:( (and that this is my first opportunity to raise discus from fry ...) They are mostly eating different kinds of granulated feeds, but still get some BBS - just because they enjoy it so much ;D But I guess I will discontinue hatching BBS in a couple of days ...
The two last weeks the 52 (or was it 53 ???) of them have been swimming around in 45-50 liters of water together with 32 albino bristlenose fry and some dwarf shrimps (Neocaridina sp.). Light is on 24/7 8)
The ruler on the pics is placed on the outside of the front glass - and yes, it is metric ;) (1 in = 2.54 cm; 1 cm = .39 in)
Hope you enjoy ...
