Do Discus spend most of their time near the surface of the water or twards the bottom?

I have a nice hunk of wood going in a tank that is being setup. The intention was to have it on the bottom, but until it gets water logged it is now floating around. Seeing it on the surface it kind of reminded me of roots sticking out of a bank. Since I hoped to have a quasi-S. American Biotope scene I wondered about tying it up at the top.

It takes up a lot of room up there and if the Discus like the top of the water then I should go with the original plan. The tank is 31-inches high so there is a lot of room to play with.

Any thoughts?

Thank you.

Phil:
Discus go where they can find food... ;D

Perhaps, generally speaking, food is found [ feed by us] at the surface; they become "conditioned" to look at the surface for the food.
First come ... first served. ;D ;D
I can sure tell when my discus want to be feed - they are all at the surface!!!

Just wondering/thinking - would the discus have to compete, for the food, in a less surface area[??].

Intressting most of the time in the bottom of tank. Younger fish higher up in the water. When feed all at the top.
