Can anyone help me with the genetic make up of platinum discus (Wattley strain I am told). I am thinking of crossing with gold or PB due to lack of bars and their high fin shape.. I am most impressed with the shared knowledged on this forum (Carol R. kicks butt)! Thanks for the help to all!

Post a picture and we can guess, or better yet call Gabe at Watleys and ask. If I remember correctly they are white based from browns

The JW platinum gold is nothing more than a ghost. Some have a golden head, while others dont. I have some of his red turks and they are not a true strain. They throw a mix of blue ghost and red turks (about a 35/65 ratio). The ones I grewout turned out to have a very light irridescent blue/purple over there whole body and head region. This one that I posted is from one of my pairs. The pic shows the blue as a wierd green, which I have yet to discover how to fix on my camera :-\.

The picture doesnt do this fish justice, it is truely magnificent. In the right light, it turns an almost irridescent purple.

Here is a picture of ours. What do you think if you were to cross one of these with a checkerboard pb?

Yep, these are ghosts. Nice shape on both. Should be fine to cross with PB - if grandparent was a red turk you'll get some with pepper.

We aren't sure what the grandparents were. Here is a picture of our pb that we thinking about crossing.

Be sure to post pictures of their youngsters. It will be fun to see what patterns you get. Probably lots of gold eyes.

Wow nice ghost Ryan! good strong head shape, I'd try to cross it to a hi-body solid blue line like a cobalt or bd, maybe you can take an old cobalt strain that has that head-notch from the hi-body gene and try to round it out

Thanks for the compliments everyone! I wish I still had that fish, because I sold it about 6 months ago and the parents have stopped producing. Im thinking they are almost over the hill for breeding (3 years old). Looks like another trip to Miami is in order ;D. Hopefully I can get one more good hatch from this pair. If not, then they will make a nice addition to a display tank.
