Hi Barb,

Congratulations on all that sex going on in your home! I always find it exciting to find out your plecos have spawned...especially if there's no initial planning that's been done.

It sounds like they're in their own tank correct? How often do you do water changes in their tank? What are you currently feeding them with?

Hey Barb,,, if it has fins, it works for me! ;D ;D ;D

Nice angels and I envy you with the pleco spawn too. Pleco seem to take for ever to mature and reproduce...I am being patient.
I have prepared; feed them well and clean the tank... hmmmmmmmm sounds like discus! ;)

Ps April... shipping water would be too expensive; just get her fish! ha ha ha :D

Hi April, I have an idea! You could visit me, pick up the water and we can work on some water changes LOL and yes... I will be shipping as soon as I have fish to ship. All of my rr x ss fry are gone but I have some 2 week olds now and........

check this out. These guys spawned last night in their own breeder tank, ro/tap mix. These are my gold pigeon snakeskins that do the "orgy" thing all the time.

Hi Howie... yes, there is lots of fish sex around here! LOL
The plecos; yes they are in their own tank, 20 gal bare bottom with some caves. I feed algae wafers, spirulina flake, mixed flake, zucchini and bloodworms. They eat everything that my discus eat. I change their water 2x/ week - approx 50% with aged dechlor water. Any suggestions? The babies are in there with the adults and seem to be doing fine. They were out today eating spirulina flake. Do I leave them in there? The male is flaunting himself again, looking for another female visit!

Hi Jean, thanks.
Ps April... shipping water would be too expensive; just get her fish! ha ha ha Hmmmmmm LOL

Hi Barb,

Sounds like all is going perfectly for you...in all your tanks! If the babies are already eating spirulina and the like, that's excellent. The water change regimen is good, as the babies don't seem to like constant changes, such as with Discus. What they do like similar to Discus fry are BBS.

BTW...your snakes look gorgeous...I'm very jealous. :)

Hi Susan,
Wow Barb, you are truely the FISH MOM!!!! I'm the fish mom, the dog mom, the cat mom and the son and daughter mom.... VIAGRA --- I'm adding it to my angel tanks as well, my black veil and smokey lace have wigglers. This is my male, he hates me, attacks me every time I go near the tank.

Hi Howie, they like bbs? hatched baby brine? Is that their first food? for my next spawn? I've got some bbs hatched now for discus fry, I'll give them a try. Thanks.

In addition to the algae wafers you can also try the spirulina tabs...I'm sure they'll like them. :)

Barb your doing and all round good job with all these fish. Keep feeding those Koi's the BBS and they will grow out very nice. Next chop up some bloodworms for them and throw in a little flake food for added vitamins. Don't forget they like water changes just as much as your Discus do. I give mine 100% water changes just like my Discus.

Hi George, thanks for the tips :) How long do these little guys eat baby brine, until they can't find them anymore? They are eating spirulina and a mixed flake now. I'll shave some bloodworms as well. Water changes; I've been doing approx 50% daily with aged, dechlor water. What temp do you keep yours at? These guys are at 81.

Hi, well after a trying weekend, the babies attached and are doing well. I moved some in with rose red because it didn't appear that the pair had enough slime. The gold pair have 1/2 of the fry and rose red and snakeskin are raising the other half.

Susan... the light above the tank helped, as did covering the sponge with a stocking and lowering the water level. It seemed that when I removed the over head light, the fry scattered.

Thanks.

Barb, so glad the light thing helped. Liz told me about it and lowering the water level and it worked for me. Right now Im trying to remineralize all my fish so we have nothing going on in the breeding department. Hopefully after a month of vitamin packed foods and remineralized water, the hatch rates will come back up. Best of luck on those beautiful babies!!!! And yes, please post your water parameters. We are getting ready to route around the softener so that should help some with growth and overall health. Just hope it doesnt lime up my tanks to the point the fish disappear....lol.

Hi Susan, how are you and thanks again for the tips. Little yellow babies are doing very well, I plan to move them out today -- 8 days free swimming. The parents are beginning to fight a bit so the fry will be safer in their own tank and they're eating bbs happily now.

Barb Newell

I can't wait to watch them grow, first time for yellow babies.

Barb Newell
07-31-2004, 11:13 AM
Rose red and snakeskin are raising some of the gold fry, as well as their own. I'm also removing these babies today.

My water; temp 82, I use ro/ tap mix - conductivity 75. Before they spawn I make sure the tank is spotless, rinse sponges, wipe down sides. I keep two pots for spawning and change it right before they spawn so it's freshly sterilized. Then I just leave them alone, when done I use a turkey baster and squirt a bit of meth blue (premixed with water in a cup) onto the eggs. I've had better hatch rates since I started doing that. I also add a bit of blue to the water.

They look fantastic Barb, thanks for the rundown on your proceedures. Im working on getting a PT Cruiser and if we can swing it, we will come see you. Least that wont be the gas hog that our vans are. I never thought about switching the pots/cones around for sterilized ones, bet that is why we are getting so many non-hatching eggs. Thanks for the tips!!!!

Hi Ronny, how are you? Thanks :)

I find it helps a lot. The pair spawn on a spotless cone.

Rose red and snakeskin (who are getting really good at this) had a few bad spawns, lots of white eggs and lots of fungus! That's unusual for them. I noticed there was slimy stuff on the pot. Now I just pop the new pot in there when they are ready to spawn. Makes a big difference.

Wooooooowwww, thats fantastic folks.
My name is tom and I am new to the forem and already yelous of the fantastic results you all seem to get.
I have a pair of rose reds (very young still) who attempted to spawn a couple of days ago but the male desided that the taste of the caviaar was irrisisteble ;-(
Anyway concrets to the new mum and Ill keep reading and learning and trying and asking silly questions to you guys until I to will become a discus dad ;-)

Please keep me in mind when you are ready to sell some of the white butterflies and plecos.

The discus I purchased from you in February are still doing great.

Hi Michael, thanks,
Did you get a pay increase??? No, but even better, met some new friends.

Yes it feels like a fry factory, a little overwhelming. I peeked in the cave last night, there's a ton of pleco eggs in there and the male is fanning them. I'll let you know if they hatch. Here are the little gold pigeon ss babies, they're 10 days old. The darker ones in the group are from rose red x snakeskin pair. Talk soon, you've done a good job raising the other fish you got from me, any more pics? Were they from the greens?

Hi Susan, OUCH!!!!!!!!!!! $699. for one month..... that's high!
It's 84 in my house and the fight is about to be on!!!!.............. afraid to ask ??? who won?
I'm going to try insulating my tanks, what do you think? There is a post here on Simply about it, thanks Brian.
http://forum.simplydiscus.com//index.php?board=19;action=display;threadid=19992

Hi Dave, I bought one of those cheap little 18" fluorescent kitchen lights from Home Depot and placed it on the glass lid of the tank -- the tank was very bright, left it on 24-7. For some reason, the fry attached much easier with it on. When I shut it off, they scattered! I turned it back on, they headed for the parents. ??? I also lowered the water level in the tank and put a white nylon stocking over the hydrosponge.

Hi Barb Again :)

I agree with you What i am doing with my fry discus are attrach to the parents. Depend on what the strains can carry fry would not need for lower level water.

important to leave light on 24/7 for the fry to stay with the parents.

take care

Hi Barb,

I am doing very well thank you. I am sorry I don't get pay attention your replied.

Your fish are really AWESOME AMAZING, They are nothing wrong.

I have great 10 breeding pairs but i have problems with the water systems. I know they are very good parents. But I dont get a good chance babies from the breed pairs.

I am still figured out how can i work on the water .It would successful spawning.

I was living in Victoria, The water are really great for breeding discus and no problems i had so many babies, disucs, Angels, cory catfish. Right now i am living in Nanaimo, B.C. its more diffrent water than Victoria water, i wish here would have the same victoria's water.

Reason is the problems is hardness water bec of the tap water come out in aging tank the ph 6.6 and hardness is really very pretty low.. Maybe Carol is right. I am wrong.

I am really very pretty confused about hardness water test and electric conductivity.

my aging tank water its 24 hours old, the ph 6.6 35 conductivity.

When I do water change my breeding tanks 50 % to 80%

I put new water from the aging tank.

now I can read test water 6.4 PH 54 conductivity

How does it work for breeding tank?

I figured out myself now the conductivity said that 33 mS = 17.9 ppm
33mS = 1 DH
1 DH = 17.9 ppm

for the legal discus breeding at

6 to 7 DH
198 mS to 231 mS
107.4 ppm to 125.3 ppm

are better egg hatch rate.

Maybe I am wrong.

the problems is how can i make from low hardness to high?

Keep up your work with your beauitful pairs and the babies. BUT I am still want those your fish hehehe

take care your firneds
Duncan :)
