How to make an old tank ready for new fish

I use my kitchen tank to quarantine all new discus. I moved the ghosts out about 10 days ago and kept the filter alive with clear ammonia.

This tank has it's own water barrel, hoses and cleaning supplies.

Yesterday I added enough Potasium Permanganent (pp) to turn the water in the storage barrel purple. I ran the purple water through the water pump and hoses in the storage barrel for 4 hours and let it sit overnight.

I also added pp to the tank, threw all the cleaning sponges and hoses inside and let it run over night

I put the cycled sponges in a bucket of tank water overnight

I put hydrogen peroxide in the tank to nutralize the pp. Can you see the cleaning brushes and python in the tank?

I scrubbed the tank and storage barrel. Rinsed and refilled with warm water. Cleaned filter including impellor, replaced sponges and let run for the 4 hours it tooke me to go to the airport and get my Auroras

Tell us a bit more about the fish...how old they are... genetic info about the strains...where you got they from.

Also it might be helpful to anyone reading the first post if you edit. it to include the aprox. amounts of pp and hydrogen peroxide you used.

The Auroras were imported by Jeff Young. I don't know anything about their genetics or age.

The sponges came out of an aqua clear 500. I just showed them in the bucket so you could see how I kept them out of the pp overnight. The pp came from Sears (water softener section)

I didn't measure carefully because I did not have fish in the system. I think I used about 1/2 teaspoon pp for for 50 gallons. Probably 1/4 teaspoon would have worked.

You can see the hydrogen peroxide work. I poured in about 1/4 bottle. I didn't want the pp to stain the concrete out the back door.

I noticed the tank is above your dishwasher, do you have any problems with over heating the tank when you are running the dishwasher?

Actually I don't use the dishwasher. I rarely cook and just wash our few dishes by hand. When I remodel the kitchen I'd like to take the dishwasher out and use it as a place to store the water barrel. ;D

This sounds like a quick and easy way to get the tank are sparkly clean ;D. I will have to try it next time I get fish.
