Hi Adrian,

I've heard they can live for several years. The oldest ones that I have are nearly 3 years old.

I know someone is Canada who had a domestic female die just a few days short of 10 years.

With proper care, many fish belonging to the cichlidae family can live fairly long lives.

It's not unusual to expect your Discus to live for close to ten years.

6-7 years seems to be pretty common with proper care and good food.

Thanks all,
I was hoping someone would say 12, but i guess that maybe that's a good number to shoot for. ;D Is there any known variation between strains? How about between domestics and wilds?

When do they stop breeding?

I had a "brilliant turquoise" discus that lived to be 7 years old. He was raised in a planted/gravel tank with a wet-dry filter and a 20% water change every week or two. He was gorgeous, and I wonder how much longer he would have lived had I known to do more frequent water changes. (His fellow discus tankmates lived an average of 5 years each).

He spawned a few times with a pigeon blood, but the corys always ate the fry.

I have 4 discus that are almost 9 years old they just dont look as good as they did 4 or 5 years ago Had a customer come over and he told me they dont look good anymore that I should get rid of them All I did was ask him how old his mother and father were This way we could get rid of them all at the same time ;D
