I read that one of the things to watch for in young discus is a "roman nose". I'm a little confused on the subject, so please bear with me. The roman nose is supposed to be an undesireable trait in discus, and is usually taken care of by culling. What does a roman nose look like? Does anyone have any pictures?

Hi Adrian,

I've never heard the term "Roman Nose", so I'm not exactly sure what the person was talking about, unless it's the same thing as what is referred to as a "beak".

Does anyone have pics they can post? I'll look around, and see if I can find any.

The term roman-nose is also referred to as saddle-nose, or parrot beak. This is a deformity which is an indication of poor breeding. Basically it deviates from what a well bred discus should look like, nice and round, with a gradual curve, including the area from the mouth up to the start of the dorsal fins.
