Hey Randal,

Quick question... My RO unit is now producing 70ppm water off of 300ppm source...

1. Would flushing the membrane help get back to the 20ppm I used to get?

2. If so what is the procedure to flush it out?

Cesar,
It's probably your prefilters, but flushing the membrane never hurts...

Membrane Flush:

1) Locate the flow restrictor on your RO unit
(It will be in the waste water fitting on the membrane housing or on the waste line itself. It will be a small plastic piece with a hole in it or a cylinder with fittings on either end)
2) Turn off the water
3) Remove the flow restrictor
4) Make adjustments of waste hose to keep from spraying water everywhere (Replace the hose in the fitting or direct it to a bucket)
5) Turn water on and run for 15 Seconds to 1 Minute
6) Turn water off
7) Replace flow restrictor

That's it...
I had to add steps 2,4,6 after getting yelled at by people who were getting wet LOL

now that you mention it prefilters do look nasty... I will put in a new prefilter and flush the membrane...

Thanks Randal...

New prefilter and flushed membrane... Went from 70ppm to 50ppm with booster... I guess the days of 15-20ppm are gone :'( ...

One last question if I may...

What is the maintenance routine for swapping out prefilters, carbon blocks, membranes, etc...?

Thanks...

Hi Randal,
I too have some questions officer.

Is it better to have 2 micron filter and 1 carbon or 1 micron and 2 carbon?

Which is goes first the micron or carbon before the membrane?

Thank you officer :)

how about 1 micron filter, 1 carbon and 1 cbr2???

>>That depends on your water conditions, but I recommend at minimum every 6 months. Most people will need to replace them more frequently than that, Watch the time it takes to produce a set amount of water and check it weekly. When it starts decreasing, change you filters. I personally time how long it takes to make a cup of water and if it takes 10 seconds longer than with clean filters, I replace them. That's just me though. As a rough Idea, here's a general recommendation for a 5 stage (3 prefilter unit): If your water is 0-150 PPM TDS, Replace every 3-6 Months. 150-300, Every other month, 300+ Every month. This is just a rough guide.

>> That would depend on how much chlorine (or Chloramine) is in your water. I doesn't hurt though to have 2x carbons.

Which is goes first the micron or carbon before the membrane?

>> The Micron or sediment filter goes before your carbon blocks. The whole purpose of that is to have the cheaper sediments clog before the more expensive Carbons...
