A few of us decided to take a trip to the main land and see Chichen Itza, the lost Yucatan capitol of the Mayan Empire.

Along the way, my buddy Pete got on the wrong ferry. He looked so sad (or mad ??? ) ;D

So much engineering went into this city so long before "modern" men arrived... I wish I could remember half of what I was told there...

Here's looking up the stairs... (I'm in the white shirt)...

When we arrived, the travel company forgot to place someones bag on the van. On the second day, we were trying to retrieve the bag but we had a problem with the language barrier. Finally, we got a call from the front desk saying that someone was here to take her to the airport to get her bag. It happened to be the police :o

While we were drinking margaritas and playing water volleyball, the Cozumel airport was in lock-down :-[

Poor Terri got "escorted" to the airport by a military truck and two Hummers with machine gunners. After the interrogation, they took her to a field that contained only snipers and a cement mixer... Talk about scared!!! :waaa:

It turned out that her bag had been placed inside the cement mixer. When she opened the bag and they all found out it was her "female" bag, they all started laughing and brought her back to the resort...

She was in no mood to party that night :'(

Hi all,
Hey Brian, those pics bring back some good memories for me. Isn't Chichi just incredible? Did you eat at the hotel right outside the entrance to the ancient grounds? I remember those fresh tortillas made by the Mayan woman......My wife STILL raves about 'em! We ate with a couple of iguanas chillin at our table with us. Hey, did you go in the small burial(?) chamber/ statue room at the base of the pyramid? Also, the effect of the undulating snake body down the pyramid was an incredible feat of architecture. The Cenote was HUGE and I saw some cool fish swimming around in there......I wanted to repel down and explore it ;D We stayed at Palace Resorts(Sun palace? next to Spa Palace) on the Mayan Riviera and went across to snorkel at Cozumel. Now that was some serious snorkeling ;) We, along with another couple of friends we went with, hired a guide one day to drive us to Cancun and show us around the area. He took us to one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen in my life. It was in some movie(wasn't listening, too busy trying to get outta the van) and was absolutely breath-taking. Cancun was CRAZY and there were kids everywhere. Club Coco-Bongo was jumpin. I'm so glad we stayed far away from the spring-breakers! I'll try to find some of my pics and post, as well. I hope you had a blast. Sorry for HJ'ing your thread.

Hi Steve,

Yes, it was pretty remarkable. I didn't get a chance to go inside the pyramid. The line was too long and it wasn't moving. Plus, it was about 98 degrees with about 200% humidity!

The architecture is fascinating, to say the least. I don't want to go into a whole history lesson, but if anyone goes I highly recommend taking a guided tour. They can tell you more about the ruins in one hour than you could read in a semester at college. Steve, remember the 7 echo's at the court? :)

I definately plan on returning to the Yucatan some day...

BTW, I'd like to see your photos'!!!

Jeep,
Nice trip. I hear Cozumel is a nicer stay than Cancun. Wife and I went to Cancun on our HoneyMoon almost 10 years ago now. Cancun was super commercialized, so we looked for every excuse and opportunity to get out to the country side on day trips. Even got lost a few times.

We took a day to visit Chichen Itza. At the top of the Mayan Pyramid I had an attack of Montazuma's Revenge in the 95degF heat. So uncomfortable climbing down. My wife and I hurried down so fast, that she sprained her ankle. What a couple of pathetic Gringos we were that day. Her limping badly and me bent over.

Did you get a chance to head over to Xcaret?

Cozumel is definately more old Mexico than Cancun. Once you get past the initial shops where the cruise ships come in, you can find some interesting places and life-styles...

We didn't make it to Xcaret... Our guides were a little past schedule. We were supposed to be on the 7p ferry back to Cozumel and had to make a run for it just to catch the 11p ferry (the last one). It just made the day even better ;D
