I have a filter media that consists of:
foam/sponge
ceramic rings
ammonia (amrid)
biomax

this is for a planted discus 50 gallon tank.
i know that carbon is not supposed to be used but what about amrid? also...how much biomax should be used? i have about 13 oz. of biomax on the top.

If your tank has plants - keep in mind that plants love ammonia ;D . There really is no need for amrid in a planted tank. In fact, a heavily planted tank is all you need for biological filtration. I usually use just the ceramic rings & a flavor of biomax (mostly because you gotta put something down there) and filter sponges in my canister... it's more for mechanical filtration then anything else.

I agree with what Mark said. If you are doing large water changes, as many discus keepers do, then you probably do not have to worry much about amrid/biomax type products. Biological filtration will probably be handley by the foam/mech products, water changes, and plants.........
