John,

think temp and salt's your best bet.. 88 degrees/ 2 tbls/10 gal non iodized salt..

An excellent article in the library on ick..

Methaline blue or Malachite Green are supposed to be effective, thought the library article says you may need to go to something heavier if it's a serious outbreak..

hth and good luck
Jim

PS. I've had trouble finding either Mblue or mgreen at LFS's.. Maracide by Mardel is widely available and is supposed to be effective as well.. increase airation w/ the higher temps

John,
My experience with Ich is to raise temp to 85-86 and add salt...but I see your concern for your plants etc...so one choice is to move your infected fish to a barebottom tank and treat with heat and salt. There are commercial medications like maracide, Formalin and/or malachite solutions, Methylene Blue, that may help but may not be recommended for a planted tank..

Petsolutions on their website advertises a product called Aquarisol
which is supposed to be safe for plants. http://petsolutions.com/product.asp?pn=42700403

Heat and clean tanks are the best preventor of ich in Discus IMO,

if i move the fish to another tank and treat with heat and salt do i still have to treat the planted tank?

Tad

John,

The discus are the host for the parasite (adult larvae)...If you remove them (discus) from the tank and treat and there are no other fish left in the original tank, you will break the cycle as the tomites need a host which they must find in 3-4 days after they "hatch" out of the cyst, or they will die..thus in theory ending the cycle. IMO I would not re-introduce fish back to the planted tank for at least 10 days!

As Cosmo said there is a great article in the library on Ich: http://www.simplydiscus.com/library/disease_medications/external/ich.shtml

Tad

very aggressive solution for your problem. Personnaly PP scares me though many board memebers use it with their fish in the tank.. Would think it would eat your plants too, but could be wrong

Hello all
Just wondering if you can use regular non iodized salt from the store to treat your fish?

Cosmo

For aquarium application, salt is salt as long as there are no additives.

I use Solar Salt (blue bag) from Home Depot. 60lb bag for $5.

Hi John
I am curious, are you going to move a established bacteria colony to your new tank? I am in the same boat as you but I think it is easier for me to move my plants into a new tank and treat the main tank with salt and higher temps.
Good luck and let me know how you are making out ok.

i think in going to move the fish it easer 7-discus/2-gold nuggets/1-leapard placo /12 alge eaters .i have over $140 in plants and the co2 system and light .so i think the fish are easyer .also give me time to move the plants around with out stressing the fish out.good luck.

carol should i go by other post (sold in pet stores as Formalin and in a combination with dyes as Quick Cure and Rid Ick or can be purchased online. One cc or ml per 10 gallons of water. 50% water change after 8 hours. Do not raise temperature. Add extra air as it depletes oxygen. If you see an improvement after first dose you can treat every other day for two weeks. Dose all fish in tank. May impact biofilter.)

That's how I dose formalin. I believe it will work for Quick Cure too.
