Hi all,

Normally we try to keep the general section to just Discus related topics... and we have a section dedicated to non-discus banter, but I thought it might be fun to have a non-discus topic of the week here in general.... suggestions for future ones can be Im'd to me and we'll try run them as we can.

For a starter, I picked Non-discus fish.. Fess up everyone, you know most of you keep them...koi?goldfish?bettas, etc..
Lets hear about and see those other fishes...

Thanks,
al

Well, I have 3 oscars, a bunch of firemouths, some glowlight tetras, some corydoras paleatus (bred by me :)), some bristlenose plecos from the lfs earlier this yr, and some fancy guppies from Cary at GLD (actually I think Jack does all the work and sales or at least that's how it worked when I was there ;);D)

The pic is of the oscars spawning, but that female has never produced a viable spawn (with 2 different males) The tiger is the male, he is now with a different suspected female, but no spawns yet.

That'a an awesome looking Oscar.

I finally got fish that it's not a discus. Thanks to Al. :) These Altums in a 120 planted tank with 100 or so Cardinals, 4 Corys and a pleco.

All I have is the infamous Bighead - check him out:

http://forum.simplydiscus.com//index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=8543;sta rt=msg91190#msg91190

Plus his cohort of 3 rainbowfish.

Bighead's hobbies are killing heaters, eating rainbows that he can fit into his mouth and threatening people he doesn't know when they come near his tank.

I have some clown loaches and a red betta.

Nice Oscars Ardan. That's what we'll be getting next.
What are you feeding those guys?

Dan: Tank looks good as always.

DD: Bighead is kind of cute. At his age he's allowed to be a "Grumpy old Man" ;)

Cool Pics everyone!!
Carol, I do like that african tank especially with the fry with the parents amongst the other fish. 8)
John, Bighead seems to have lots of character ;D
Dan, impressive tank 8) :)
Judi, tell about the care and feeding of the frog???
Jules I feed my oscars Hikari Gold med size pellets mostly as they are messy eaters. I also feed them culls from my firemouth hatches.

I use to feed live goldfish, but they developed many internal problems, like hexamita quite often, so pellets = no troubles and they do well.

Ardan,

The frogs are easy!!! They eat CBW and only get fed once or twice a week (yes... you read correctly). Water changes are far and few between. Frogs only excrete waste every few days, so they don't foul the tank as quickly. They are a great pet for kids and frog fanatics!!! Chocked full of personality!!

How about a few of these guys? I brought some of these in for a customer of mine. The next fish I really want to invest my time in is the arowana. I have been studying them for about a year now.

Got tons of babies from these 2. Would love to make someone a great deal on some. Be forewarned, they eat like pigs. Got some around 1 inch, a bunch between 2-3 inches. All very healthy. Gold Severums

This last week has bee "move all the fish and all the tanks around the house" week for me. I moved the juvnile discus and their filters from the 55 to the 105 gallon, moving the cichlids from the105 to the 55 and 58 gallons, which both had to be moved around. All the canister filters on the 55 and 58 got cleaned, along with all tubing, the gravel was removed and cleaned, all the rocks and fake plants were cleaned.

After all that was done, with new backings on all the tanks to match the discus tank's insulated backing, I decided to clean the rest of the filters. In dong that, I managed to start up the EheimPro2Thermofilter and not have the siphon going correctly. This is the only canister I have that I actually paid for, $250, all the rest were used.

In the morning, I realized something was wrong, and found that I'd apparently burned out the windings on the motor, or at least most of them. Finding this out, of course, took several hours as I switched tubings and inlet tubes and checked and rechecked all connections and parts. This is the same tank that I'd managed to start up the Eheim 2213 on with all valves closed for 3 or 4 hours -- that one recovered somehow.

Meanwhile, 8 cardinals died, leaving 3, and I'm down to 1 serpae tetra of 6 and I'd just added new cories to that tank. So, now the main planted tank is limping along. I really dont know if that qualifies as "keeping" other fish. Right now it looks like I'm mostly killing them.

At the same time, the other planted tank has only 1 apisto and 3 ember tetras. Down from 2 rams, 2 apistos, and 11 ember tetras.

At an aquarium club meeting on Wednesday, a local fish store owner who keeps all his tanks on reconstituted RO water said that the "things" in our water make it hard to keep fish here. Hmm, and I though maybe it was me. So, I think I need a good carbon filter, at the least. Any suggestions?

Hey Anona,

It is very normal for cardinal to die after a WC.

Says who? I did 75% Water changes on my planted tank 3x per week for 2 years and never lost one. I was keeping them in Chicago Tap water with no treatment too...

I kept cardinals in my tap as well.

Discus King... is it normal for glow-lights to die after a water change... cause, you know, those pesky things keep right on living ;).

Hey Anona,

It is very normal for cardinal to die after a WC.

Nonsense.

Only if you let a tank get far from tap water values, by letting it go so long that the pH has dropped, the Gh has risen from topping off after evaporation, the KH is dropped from biological processes, and the nitrate is through the roof -- THEN a water change will be dangerous. The difference in GH can cause cellular damage.

But, this had nothing to do with the water change. I ruined a filter, even cleaning it land changing water left enough toxins in the water to hurt the cardinals. It had been 3 weeks since a water change due to my vacation, but even so the water parameters should not have changed much. Temp was OK, dechlorinator was used. I was hoping that the plants would absorb any excess ammonia and nitrates, and the Prime dechlorinator would handle the nitrites, but I was wrong, or at least overnight when the plants were no help the toxins got too high for the cardinals.

Everyone looks OK today. I just need to decide about ordering a new head for the filter -- ouch! Expensive.
