55 gallon is a good all around tank.

I prefer the Aqua Clear 110 (formerly 500). I've had Emperor 400's and as they died replaced them with the Aqua Clears.

I like 250 - 300 watt heater for a 55 gallon tank.

Bare bottom to grow out juveniles.

IF you ar starting from scratch it may take 5 - 6 weeks to cycle the tank - (really the filter ) If you have a healthy tank up and running now you can run the new filter on it for two weeks and it will be cycled and ready for use on the new tank.

Don't try to lower pH. Do test your pH from the tap and a cup of water that has set ont he counter overnight. If the cup on the counter has a much higher pH you may need to age your water for stabile pH.

Buy 6 or 8 juveniles from a reputable breeder.

Water changes need to be uped for big fish. 50 percent every 3 days isnt enough you need to atleast 75 percent every other day. Exelent water conditions good food, lots of food, TLC, and very little stress grow big fish along with alot of room to grow. Keep then water changes up.
