I was wondering which is better for a discus tank a sponge filter or a Penguin 330?? I have a 55g tank with 7 2inch discus in it. I have the Penguin 330 in there now and it keeps it very clean also i do a 30% wc daily (have been doing a 50% because they came in stressed) anyway which would you all reccommend? Taking out the 330 and putting in 2 large sponge filters or leaving it as it is?? Thanks and by the way i have been AMAZED by the quality of discus on this site. Thanks in advance for the replies.

You could add a sponge filter and keep the penguin 330 on the 55 gallon. Then you'd have a cycled sponge for another tank any time you need it . . . I'd put a sponge (prefilter) on the water intake of the penguin

I have three sponge filters in my 75 with 7 discus varying in size from 4 to 5 inches. I dont see a need for power filters because I siphon all the poop and leftover food on a daily basis.

It wouldn't hurt to keep a sponge filter with the penguin. Besides having another sponge filter ready on hand as Carol mentioned, its always good to have backup just in case the biofilter fails in one... I've killed biofilters simply by rinsing them in the wrong water.
