Could I have 8 (1.5"-2") discus in a 29 gallon or is that a bit cramped. A 55 seems a bit big for now? I can move them to larger tank later can't I? At what size is it ideal to have 10 gallons per fish?

They're fine. It all depends on your feeding and waterchange. Eventually you'll have to move them to a bigger tank.

They'll fit in the 29 for a month or two - then it will be time to move them to a 55.

then you see photos like this at Stendkers:

Looks to be about 24 large Discus in a 75 gallon.
And you wonder, if I'm doing 50% daily water changes, can I support 8 4" Discus in a 29?
Amazing the stocking densities these professional breeders are capable of maintaining. We'd get in trouble if we tired that!

I wonder how much water Stendker is running through that tank every day? 150 - 200 gallons?

I know what you mean Carol. You've got to wonder. Obviously they are on an aggressive drip system. They don't appear to do big drain/fill cycles or wipe downs from the photos Hans is posting for us.

I know Hans you're right. The fish are spectacular. I did notice they were also on Wet/Dry filtration. Still, they must be quite aggressive with the water changes to support those stocking densities on beef heart diets.
