i've been into keeping discus now for bout 8 mon.and so far i'm doin
pretty good but i'm a diy kind of guy and i was wonderin if polyurathane
foam is exeptible for filter's? and if not what kind of foam is?

Hi funkfish and welcome to Simply! :)

The short answer to your question is yes. However, it's important that you know eactly how the material has been produced...i.e. whether or not it contains any toxic chemicals that would kill your fish in short order.

Many of us use foam inserts that are readily available from most aquarium supply places. Some manufacturers such as Aquaclear sell pieces that are already cut, or have large pieces that you can cut to size yourself. Typically these pieces are very inexpensive and last a long time.

A $4-5 dollar sponge that you know won't kill your fish is well worth it. I thought about using my own sponges, but then the idea of killing off my tanks changed my mind.
