We sure don't celebrate CNY in the States like in the Asian Countries. Lot of my friends have traveled back to Vietnam for this occasion. If you know what I mean.

Wishing everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year ... Chinese like fish alot during new year as the pronounciation is similar to abundant. Thus we have fish in our re-union dinner OR for fish hobbists like me, we stock up our collection :) so I had 4 new discus this year :)

:D HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

Well, this would be my year if I were Asian, since by the calendar my sign is the cock/rooster.. so maybe there will be some good things happenin', like retirement & new home in a new state (Tn). lol, Dottie

Hey, isn't it only the young unmarried kids that get red envelopes? (at least that's what I was told in my family)

Happy new years :)

I just got 2 red packets worth of money in the mail from my Parents!!

Anyway, as fellow aquarists, I think this one would be more pertinent to us.

Nian Nian You Yu.
Meaning: May you be blessed abundantly.
Literally translated : May you have many many fishes!!! :D

Would some one kindly explain the red packets to those of us who are lacking in our knowledge of Chinese/ Asian culture. Happy Chinese New Year!

Cary

The red envelopes ("Hong Bao" in Mandarin, "Lai See" in Cantonese) are an old Chinese tradition for Chinese New Year (based on the lunar calendar). On the envelopes are usually the words for "Fortune" and "Good Luck" and inside is usually money. These are usually given to younger generations (ie. kids) by family and friends; sometimes single adults get them too. :D :D (note: the red envelopes are also given out to the wedding couple, birthdays, and other special events/ holidays).

Here's a page with some pictures of the red envelopes:

Just to add to Walter's excellent explaination, the reason why the packets (and usually pretty much everything else during this celebration) are usually RED is because red is an auspicious color for the Chinese culture.

Thank you, Marc and Walter, for the enlightenment. The pictures are helpful also. Being of mixed heritage and from a country less than 300 years old, I am very fascinated by the traditions of your culture that is well over 3000 years old. May the New Year bring Peace and Prosperity.

:balloon: :balloon: HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!! :balloon: :balloon:

I was in NYC Chinatown this morning looking for the parade but we were told it will be held on Sunday instead. Kind of was looking foward to getting some nice pictures. But the adventure of getting those Xi Li, dolls and jade stones on cords were a lot of fun!
