I purchased 7 assorted blue and red discus from http://somethingsphishy.com/ about 4 weeks ago. All was well, water and fish were perfect. I then purchased another 4 red discus from http://somethingsphishy.com/ last week. About 2 days after introducing the new red discus 5 of the assorted blues started coming down with what is apparently the plague. One blue diamond died today, the other 4 blue are in a hospital tank and being treated with Maroxy and salt.

Interesting part of this story is that the new red's havent' yet come down with the plague yet. One is starting to show a small amount of white discolaration, but not certain at this point that he's got it. I'll be keeping a close eye out.

I also received an email newsletter from http://somethingsphishy.com/ today which specifically dealt with discus plague and the fact that somethingsphishy hasn't had a single case of the plague since using some new expensive filtration system. This could just be a conicidence, but I think something is definitely "Phishy"... The only place I've purchased discus is from http://somethingsphishy.com/, so I can only guess that the plague came from http://somethingsphishy.com/.

Well that is why QT is needed. It sounds like a simple problem of bacteria to me.

Columnaris (bacterial infection) has similar symptoms. The treatment recommended to me was using Furan2, and lowering water temperature.

and heavy doses of salt (1tbls/2gal)

(added to Terrybo's low temp and furan2 post)

Costia can also cause similar symptoms.

i recently bought a new discus which i am afraid infected my others with the plague as well. There is an article in the Tropical fish magazine this month by Jack Whatley which details a treatment by lowering ph to like 4.0 . has anyone ever tried that with success?

I have a lot of respect for Mr. Wattley, but with todays range of meds and knowledge there is no need to do that. There are multiple ways to treat this fairly quickly and without loss with meds.
