Opinions please

Hello all, I have an idea that may sound a little off but here goes. I was thinking of making a fluidized bed filter to set outside my tank when I got a thought that asked me why does the filter have to be outside the tank ? I was thinking of taking a glass gallon jug and putting sand in it and rig a powerhead to pump the water down a pvc pipe to fluidize the sand. This may sound a bit crude but the concept is the same as an outside fluidized bed fiilter isn't it ?? I thought that the powerhead wouldn't have to work so hard as it doesn't have to "pump" the water back up into the tank.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
