Everyone,

I am going to set up a breeder tank, and, optimistically, a 55 gallon for the grow out tank. I previously decided on a 29 gallon and 55 gallon, since those seemed to be the consensus choices. I can buy a 40 gallon breeder and a 50 gallon breeder for a good(?) price ($1/gallon). Does it make that much difference, or should I just go with the 40 and 50?

Thanks for the input.

The breeder tanks tend to be shorter and you want to give your breeders some height.

Also, the 29 is shorter so its easier for the fry to find the parents.

When my discus pair up, they usually end up in a 20 or 29 gallon breeder tank. But if they produce a couple of large spawns, then they go into 40 breeders. The parents will do fine in a smaller tank. But if you start to get large spawns, its much easier to main high water quality in a 40 breeder. Its also easier to remove the parents and leave the frys in a 40-breeder at the right time. Because of the large footprint, you can clean a 40-breeder without getting near the parents and fry.
