The first Discus I purchased were from the LFS, they were about 2 1/2" to 3", and I bought them in December.

I then bought the next few from breeders in February, and they were about the same size, 2 1/2 to 3" when I bought them.

The ones I bought from the LFS are still the same same size, and the ones I bought from the breeder are now much bigger.

Can the fish get permanently stunted?

Thanks,

Jim

Unfortunately Jim, the answer to your question is pretty much, yes. It's very difficult, if not impossible, to get a young Discus caught back up on its growth. You can try feeding them high protein foods such as beefheart and see if you can squeeze some more size out of them but IMO, you are pretty much out of luck after six months. :(

If you just purchased a pair from a LFS who and after talking to a couple of breeders on the phone about shape and eye size
What is the best way to tell if these fish will grow or not?

If you purchased an adult pair from lfs they are done growing. If purchased 2 juveniles look at eye in proportion to body. Post picture and we can give you our oppinion
