Hi there,

if the tank is barebottom that 9 hours is ok. But the usual time is 12 hour a day.

12 and 12 is just fine. Depending on your own schedule. If you need to do maintenace or enjoy them in the middle of the night. You can have them on 24 hrs. a day. They can rest with the light on. Fish are more peaceful and relex without having the light turn on and off.

I turn the light on only when I am home - mine probably get 3 -4 hours on week days - much more on the weekends

Carol, do they spawn more often when you turn the lights off? :D

No. I just do what's easiest for me :)

I don't think that the Discus really care.

From years of fishing, John told me that fish with a lateral line rely on something other than sight to find their food. Finding food is what's most important to fish, after all.

I've heard people say that Discus don't mind low light. My fish room is low light, unless I'm looking at them. (we have some bad algea down here) So I agree with Carol. Do what suits you best.
